What do you do when you're not sitting in front of your computer working on your CTS? Do you bowl, go fishing, read a book?
One fo my favorite activities is fly fishing when it's in season, when its' not I read alot.

Well, I like to read a lot. Admittedly, the books are computer topics...So maybe that doesn't classify as a non-computer topic. :(
Besides that I like to play pool/snooker and sports; especially tennis. However, I never get around to much of that these days...

I am learning mathematics in the university and it takes most of my time, but I enjoy it. I am fond of mathematics.
If I happen to have some free time then I like to spend it with my friends and do various crazy things. But sometimes I just want to sit alone and enjoy being away from everybody. I would like to read a lot of books, but I don't have very much time to do that (any more).

Well I like sport a lot. More watching it nowadays than playing. I organise and play in a local cricket league (I love cricket!). I play football now and then, more in goal nowadays occasionally up front when allowed!
Since being made redundant two years ago I spend a lot of time helping to raise my two young children...I'm a house husband.
And of course in my office on my computers, on the internet, gradually (trying to) building a local IT business/consultancy
By the way Lindy/Mhelios as moderators you should be leading the way and have a fuller profile...are you afraid of people knowing your age?

I'm politically active (should be doing a BA in Politics at the University of Nottingham (http://www.nottingham.ac.uk) in September), and I do a lot of grass roots stuff with the local party association in my spare time. It's a surprisingly good laugh, not something you'd expect to find. One of the best things I did was go on the Countryside Alliance march to London a few years ago, about 15 of us went from our sixth form. It was a lot of fun.
I'm also really big rock music fan, and I go to quite a few gigs. I've already got my tickets for this years Reading Festival (http://www.readingfestival.com) (UKs most important rock festival next to Glastonbury - world renound) for this years August bank holiday. I went last year and it was amazing. The best gig I ever went to was for the last night of Silverchair (http://www.chairpage.com)'s world tour last June at the Shepherd's bush Emporium in London. It was mind blowing.
Otherwise i'm into what most other young people are, going out, drinking and having a good time.

School sucks right now for me. Too much homework. Other than that i like to thinker with my car (it needs a tune up bad which ill do as soon as it gets above 40F for more than about ten minutes), read books, goof with friends, used to play soccer a lot (football to you europeans) and i dare say i was a pretty darn good defenseman. Played sweeper alot. Used to play baseball and basketball too, but they kinda fell to the wayside several years back. I play 8 and 9 ball alot (well, i used to before the pool table got buried behind boxes in the basement). I dunno, i just screw around on the computer a lot and bash the presidential candidates (this year at least) Politics is fun, but i dont think i want to do polsci for a living. Too many opinionated lying morons in that field. Most politicians annoy me (no offense Ug, i cant speak for british politicians, but i know american ones quite well and most are idiots). Who knows, maybe ill become a legal drug dealer and become a pharmacist. Maybe an architect, no fricking clue right now. Oh well, time to go do my adv. bio homework. Later

Well electoral law here regulates how much political parties can spend quite tightly, so you don't get the electoral sham like America. ;)
We're also one of only 3 countries in the world not to have a written constitution. Our whole government is resting on a series of prerogatives and unwritten rules. It's kinda scary how fragile it all is, but its very resilient because the British as a whole don't go for extremism of any form.
Prometheus
2004-03-23, 02:07 PM CST
and the nice white wigs arent extremism? Could fooled the hell out of me. OH well. THe party spending here is strictly controlled, the "hard" money that is. corportaions or individuals can donate as much as they want to a party, but not to and individual. The parties then ususally use the money they get to pay for the candidates stuff. I agree, its stupid, but its not gonna change. I just dont like the whole parlimentary idea. Its like every law that passes Blair has a chance to be removed (i realize thats not how it actually works, but you get what im saying). Just seems like the balance of power could shift very fast in an, lets say intersting, direction. Nothing against the brits, their gov is just kinda strange, but so is ours i guess.

One thing I particularly like about the British system is how quickly a government changes. The changeover is immediate, rather than waiting a month before a new government is formed as in America.
And i'm certainly not a Blair man. ;)

im not gonna ask who you want to win the american election. The time fram is kinda wierd about the american system, the lame duck sessions are pointless. But you cant really have instant gratification in government, that could cause some real problems. Its more like 2.5 months actually, elections second tuesday in novemeber and the ppl take office mid-end of january, so actually more like 2.5
That reminds me I miss voting for president this year by a little over amonth. Like 32 stinkindays. 18 year old voting requirement. I know more about voting and the candidates than most 25-30 year olds. Oh well.

Vietnam this, vietnam that, it seems to be his only way of trying to hold his own in a debate. I also really disagree with some of his protectionist stuff I've heard him say. Mind you Bush has been guilty of that himself over Steel which really didn't make a lot of sense considering him being a republican.
I also don't think Kerry has the bottle to take actions, such as removing Sadam Husseins regime in Iraq...
Where i'm from is a Conservative safe seat, which is a very good thing. Only one constituancy in the county votes Labour. We're currently closing on Blair (some say we're leading), and should hopefully have him out of office in the next election.

It is my view that politics is one of those sensitive topics that always leads to strong discussion that can easily get out of hand with flames and remarks that might offend a particular person.
As this is a multicultural board, there are many different views and beliefs that can become conflicting when discussing these issues.
Now, although this is a thread about non-computing topics in the Discussion forum, we are getting quite off topic here. Of course, everyone is entitled to there own opinion, but this thread is not appropriate for this.
As such, I am asking people to get back to the topic of "your non-computing hobbies". Sure, if it's politics as I know Ug is interested in, by all means express that, but any more heated debate on political issues and I will close this thread.
Thank you.

I can't believe how much this forum has grown since the first day I was here. Wow. Time to make new buddies!
Well, when I'm not in front of any of my computers, :D I will be biking or taking pictures. I started taking pictures last year seriously with a 20 year old Canon AE-1 Program. Borrowed it from my parents, but after the second roll got eaten up, I gave it back.
I have just picked up a new Canon EOS Rebel Ti 300V and love it. I can use all the professional EF lenses on it as well, even the $50,000 1200mm ! Ya right, like if I could afford that, I wouldn't be using a Canon Rebel. ;) I'm slowly collecting filters and accessories and can't wait for the weather to get better.
Just picked up a new bike too, so another reason to get outdoors more. Went out this past weekend before the rain came in. Hoping that this weekend is nice and I can get in a longer ride.
I love my computers and using them for work and play. But damn, we need a life too and get some color ! :D

Those AE-1's are nice, alot of people won't give them up for something newer. I use a Nikon FM2 myself, I like it because it's fully manual, and has a mechanical shutter. The only thing the battery powers is the light meter so if it dies I can still keep on taking photo's.
I also have an old Graflex Crown Graphic which is alot of fun to take pictures with. But until I can acquire a 4x5 enlarger it's just not very practical to use very much.

Yes, the Canon was very nice and I researched alot on older Nikon's like the EM and Olympus models like the OM-1 and OM-2. But if I found one on ebay, then get it serviced and cleaned, it would cost me the same as my new one. I'm still a beginner (started last year) and I think it's a great opportunity for me to test auto and manual on this SLR. I have a few pro friends who have been supportive and given me the honest ok. They think I have an eye for it after viewing my photos.
The great thing would be getting my Canon scanner working with Fedora as well as the Epson printer I have. Both are fairly new models and use USB. But I'll be using the iBook and OS X until then. The XP box is mostly for AutoCAD use, this Fedora box is my daily comfort zone after getting home from work ! :)
Glad to hear that someone else likes photography ! :D

Prometheus

in Michigan you have to be 14yrs and 9 months to take drivers ed and get a learners permit where u have to have your parent or guardien in the front passenger seat. After you get 50 hours like taht and you turn 16 you can get your lvl 2, where you can drive solo but not between midnight and 5 am (except directly to or from work) Then when you turn 17 you have a full operators license and can drive wherever and whenever u want. So basically i have been driving for a couple years now. Some places are quirky though. Like NYC you have to be like 19 or 20 to drive period, no if ands or buts. I think LA has a similar thing, but i dont know. But then Detroit, which is the nations 5th or 6th largest city, you only have to have a lvl 2 i think and you can drive in the city. Wierd system, but its cause the states do the actual licensing of people not the national government. Same way with legal drinking age actually, but the government says you make it 21 or lose a whole bunch of money. Mandates work great that way.
I still dont think i could shift lefty. Im really not that coordinated. Too used to driving with my left hand and shifting with my right. Oh well. Later.

If you get caught drinking, you are instantely on probation for 6 months or more, and if you are caught driving you license is cut up on the stop and cant drive then until you are 21. you can get alcohol, but if you get caught you are screwed.
Ug
2004-03-27, 03:22 AM CST
However you can't go in to a shop and buy alcohol til your 18. But for all intents and purposes 18 is the official limit. If you're caught with it in the street, the Police might confiscate it. And if you're "Drunk and Disorderly" you may be taken home.
There's also no age limit for alcohol consumption in the home. But by and large the age is 18, and you can get ID'd for it quite a bit.

In the US theyre required to card you if you are under 25 or 30 i think. I dont remember the exact age, but i think its 30. Granted, a lot of places dont card 25 or 30 year olds, but basically anyone between the ages of 18 and 30 gets carded no matter what. People here call the cops on kids having parties with beer and stuff (mostly old people here, maybe thats why) and they issue lots of MIPS (minors in posession, sry, i forgot you prolly dont know all the acronyms) Anyway, nothing i can do about it. Just a strange system. You can go across lake huron to Canada and drink when youre 18. A lot of my friends in Detroit and in lower michigan just go across to sarnia or windsor and party on the weekends and get wasted, and come back on saturday or sunday, cause they can legally drink in canada. Screwy system.

We were all young at one time and thought the same. Some of more curious than others about drinking. I think it's not cool to shelter your child for so long from life's issues such as drinking and smoking. Parents should communicate with their children more and not believe that their child is so good and believing that their kids are 'not doing it'.
In Canada, it's true, the age is very low for drinking and well, and the laws need to change. When we were young, there wasn't so much of a 'I don't care' attitude compared to today's kids. Alot of them don't think about life in the future. It's all about the 'bling, bling' nowadays and getting everything they want 'now'. No hard work at all. It's getting bad. Anyway... we should get back on topic. :D

We get snow on the local mountains all the time, and it's about 30 minutes away, not far. Whistler gets it too, but that's about 2 hours away from us. I think that's the best place for it. Snow in the city, just creates a driving hell to get to work ! :D

You don't need expensive equipment for photography, just and old oatmeal box and enough time to muck around with it.:)

Awful, it seems that some next weeks I will be doing nothing else but learning. I hope that I have so much motivation to do that. It is really hard to achieve good results in your speciality - you just have to learn all the time, but it is not so easy task as it may seem.
So I cannot smile at Fedora very much any more, because my only non-computing pursuit will be nothing else but learning (with some exceptions of course).
I really want to learn what I am learning and do it very well.
So I want to say good bye and good luck in your doings. Also I want to thank you for being such kind to everybody and for helping me and others.

When it comes to photography, I like messing with my family's digital camera. Digital means no film to mess with. :)

Hrm, I do a lot of things.
I write music. In particular, I play guitar, sing, and write songs. I actually composed a musical and had it performed, once, which was fun. :-)
I also really enjoy audio engineering, which basically means "recording." I've been working on moving some of my audio engineering skills into the Linux world when I have time, since there's a huge amount of software available (and PlanetCCRMA's got it all).
I spend a lot of time reading, recently. I read a lot of fantasy / sci-fi. (I noticed Bana mention WoT. :) ) Right now I've been reading a lot of Dave Duncan, but I've also got a J.V. Jones book sitting on my dresser next to my bed. And I was just reading a lot of Terry Brooks, recently. In general, I have so many series that I read that I can easily wait for everything to come out in paperback, since it always does by the time I'm caught up in whatever else is in paperback.
The exceptions are the Wheel of Time, which I'll always buy in hardcover, and the Dark Tower series, which I'm really excited that he's working on full time, now, and more books will be coming out really soon.
I spend a lot of time just talking to people. :-)
I also work a lot, but that's computer-related. I write Knowledge Base articles and generally manage IT for my company, which I really enjoy doing.
I used to sail, once upon a long time ago, and I loved it.
I did a lot of theater in school, and a bit outside of school, as well. I was good at the technical side (sound in particular, though I also did lighting and set building, and a bit of stage management), and I was okay with acting. What I really like to do is direct, though. Every time I see a play it reminds me how much I want to be directing.
And, I have done some role-playing from time to time, in any system available. I really like the Hero system (Champions), but I also like D&D 3rd edition and most White Wolf games.

You could try Rosegarden (http://www.rosegardenmusic.com/), which looks quite good.
For more suggestions try the equivalent list, which you find here (http://linuxshop.ru/linuxbegin/win-lin-soft-en/table.shtml).

Well..
I spend most of my free time on my computer. Just got into linux alittle while ago and it has really reawakened my interest. I work abit which is fun. I work at a nice restaurant and am getting abit more involved in it than I would have liked ;) I recently finished school to get my liscence to practice massage therapy although at this point I don't have it yet. I have already passed the state boards for national certification and all I need to do now is pay the state of washington more money. I used to be addicted to mudding but now I am recovering, although I installed tintin awhile ago and now I am getting some temptations.... I also read ALOT mostly science fiction and I have started a nice little science fiction story. It may be awhile till I finish the thing though. I would really like to write in my future it is my main artistic outlet I guess. I was also planning on buying a shakuhachi although I am not sure when I would have the money for it. Thats really about it, I prefer a nice simple life without much hassle or demands. Can't think with to much stuff over my head :)

haha american car bashing at its finest :P
I drive a 35th anniversary Mustang GT. Modified quite a bit, really, really fun. American sports cars are a lot like linux in my opinion, takes a while to get it working the way you want it to, but once you do..life is goooood.

MG = ok, aston martin = awesome, mini = suicide in a crash... no offense, little cars are not bad, i drive a stinking commuter car, but minis just dont fare well against some of the v10 trucks that we got where i live. With so many farmers and their trucks (farmers like to get drunk by the way) minis dont fare too well. Ill take my dads GTO anyday, Mustangs are good too, just never was much of a Ford fan. I really want a 71 Hemi Cuda, but there is no way im gonna be able to find one of those and be able to pay for it. Oh well, we can all dream

I guess my time would be split up between Reading, Photography, and listening to Music.
I don't really have a life outside my house... kinda of a shut in I guess.
Though at the moment my spare time off the computer has been spent designing a car from scratch. I'm hoping that if I can get the rest of the funds for the project I could have it built in 4 months. I just need a garage.

Hey guys,
I quit reading when we started debating on politics and why our cars sucked, but I'll share some of my fave time-killers:
1) Geocaching (http://www.geocaching.com)
2) Reading(currently on book 7 of The Dark Tower by Stephen King, his best yet!)
3) Guitar(although the people listening would rather I don't play it)
The rest of my time is at the computer. Whether I'm working or not, I usually find a reason to be in front of one.
thanks,

Guitar is something I used to do more...I still play once in a while. The problem is that all my guitars and amps are in Chicago right now ( I have my acoustic with me).
I play golf once in a while. I like to backpack, although I have not done it for at least 2 years (since I got married).
I am kinda limited in what I can afford to do right now, I finishing up my work here in Texas and heading to Chicago at the end of the year.
