My applogies for asking such stupid basic questions. this is my 2nd experience with lunix (fedora). about a year a go I tried fedora. I got fustrated by the fact that i could not install various programs rpms, yums, apt and so forth.

I thought i will try it again. here i am stuck again. I am imbarased to ask. :( How do u install yums, rpms, apt. I am using fendora core 4.

I have installed yum GUI from as instucted by http://www.fedorafaq.org/#installsoftware

How do i install progams on http://stentz.freshrpms.net/ using the yum GUI or can i even do that? for exam how would one go about installing the mplayer?

i hope make question is clear

thanks for time

You do not need freshrpms for mplayer. It should be part of the livna or fedora extras repository.

Start yumex from System Tools -> Yum Extender, give the root password, wait for it to initialize its setup. Then click the "Repos" button and make sure freshrpms is checked (and Livna isn't). Click "Install" and select mplayer from the package list. Click the "Install Packages" button to start the installation.

You may use this script (http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=86765) in order to make things easier for you while setting up your installation. Of course, even if it solves your problem now, you should try and learn how to work program installation (particularly with Yum and RPMs later on).

That happened because the way the script works has been changed, and I guess I forgot to update the instructions... Shame on me :(

Anyway, here is what you have to do:
uncompress the script (just right click the tar.gz icon and choose extract here), then go into the folder that has been created. Now double click the .sh file to run it. You may still need to add execute permission to run it though.

I'll update the instructions later on the thread. Just make sure you download the latest version of the script :)

On a side note, are you sure you want the x86_64 version of the RPM? That is intended for 64bit processor architecture, so if you don't have one, you probably want the x86 version.
