An interesting program one may want to look at when dealing with tarballs is CheckInstall:
http://asic-linux.com.mx/~izto/checkinstall/index.php

It creates an RPM of the installation process so that uninstallation in as simple as rpm -e program :)

I'm starting to find that program quite invaluable.

As useful as it is, I will always recommend starting with an RPM package when installing for consistency. But this is the next best option.

Unless you want to (recommend :) ) package up a .tgz yourself. This is a great way to help out the Fedora community by making them available to f.e. fedora.us Extras.

I have considered making some RPMS for FC1 myself. I downloaded something this morning, but I could only get it in source.

But I can't remember for the life in me what it was.

I did, and thats when I had the problem. It wasn't able to come to terms with my tarball installation.

Well just use the tarball. ;)
