Have you ever thought of starting a few contests on the forum ? Here are some ideas:

.Best new member (monthly)
.Most helpful poster (weekly and monthly)
.Most original thread starter (weekly)

Please, add up... if the thing's done with the right spirit, we could have negative nominations, too. For instance, I could get this month's "award for dumbest suggestion" :D (well, let's make it this week's ;) )

The winners could get.... well, community recognition of course, what else ? :D

It would be quite hard to pick up one from 55000 users.

We have tried rating systems in the past that did not work. Although, if used responsibly, they can be useful. In our experience it tends to cause flame wars, arguements and useless posts. Members were posting anything just to get their counts up, members were giving poor ratings to other members just because they disagreed....etc
As Petzzz said it is rather big undertaking for the few moderators that are fully active.

I like it the way it is. Just about every exchange of late has been very civil, with a few that border on slightly irritable, which usually have been spawned by trolls. Even those posts are down.
Keep it going.
