Hi,
my hard disk space has been getting pretty tight. just wondering. Must I provide twice the amt of RAM for swap space? what if I don't and just provide less?

How much is your RAM. If its about 1Gb, then you can manage without a swap space. Its not recommended but you can always live with it.

my RAM is 1GB, providing 2 GB maybe a little too much for my other stuff. would 1GB for swap space be enough?
thanks

Ya, that'll be sufficient. Twice the RAM thumb rule is just a guide line. There must be some reason they say that but I have experimented with no swap space with my 512MB RAM. It works fine except when encoding xvid movies
