I've finally desided to get a dedicated server on my home LAN (as a NFS and MySql server) and I could use some help to choose the right hardware. I don't intend buiild the fastest (and most expensive) server on the block. Instead I'm aiming to get the most bang for the buck. But I'm going to have RAID 5 controller (in hardware) and a 1Gb NIC. The load on the database server is going to be light to moderate but I want to be able to stream video from the file server.
So what to you think, what kind of hardware should I get?
1) Which maker of motherboard/raid controller is the most Linux friendly? I.e. open specs and solid support in 2.6.x kernel.
2) What kind of CPU do I need and how much memory?
3) What should I do to keep the server as silent as possible?
Thanks.
