Good news for people trying to get their sound card working that were having trouble. Somehow or another I accidentally stumbled on a way to fix it ;)

First, I'll let everyone know that I'm using the "tumbler" variety of the powermac sound. You can find out what variety you're using by doing this:

cat /proc/asound/cards

In my case mine is listed as a:

0 [Tumbler ]: PMac Tumbler - PowerMac Tumbler

Even though the tumbler *should* be supported, I decided just to be safe I'd try to install the newest version of the alsa drivers. These can be grabbed from www.alsa-project.org. I grabbed 1.0.9b

After extracting the drivers, all I did was a simple:

./configure
make
make install

and after that was done I played around with alsamixer a little bit to make sure nothing was muted. Now i'm not positive if anything was muted or not, specifically, but i did turn the volume up (resist the urge to turn the bass and treble all the way to 100 like I did.. whoops)

Now at this point I can't really remember what I did. I know that in KDE i did go into "Control Center" and under "Sound System" and the "Hardware" tab I forced it to use 8 bits since the Tumbler apparently doesn't work right with anything above 8 bit audio. I hit apply and then ran amixer and voila, the sound decided it wanted to work.

I'm not sure if it was the module, me playing around with alsamixer, or all of the above that fixed it, but i'm happy. Do keep in mind that you do need to run it at 8 bit, you can get 16 bit working but it sounds like crap ;)

Hoorah, one problem solved with FC4, if I can get the modem working I'll be a happy.

Once alsa was working appropriatley, I was able to run xmms without any problems by selecting OSS as the output mode. (Alsa installs an OSS emulation layer). Don't know why Alsa doesn't work directly from XMMS but I'm happy to get XMMS (the best audio player for linux)...
