I am using a NETGEAR Router that allows for wireless and wired connections. I am having a problem connecting to the Interent through DSL using the router. I figured I could just type 192.168.0.1 and configure it like you do in Windows.
Anyway I'm at a loss. Without the router I can connect successfully.
What am I missing please....

Try tryping 196.168.2.1 to connect to your router. You also just look at the manual that came with the router to find the IP address of the configuration utility. You should be able to connect to it just like you would in Windows.

I've looked at the manual. But I'm still stuck.

ifconfig -a tells me the ppp0 IP address is 192.168.1.1. When I saw that I thought okay it must be working. But I can't do an nslookup on www.yahoo.com, and I can't ping 192.168.0.1.

I keep thinking I need to tell the PC that there is now a gateway I have to go through...right?
If that's so where do I do that?

ppp0 is a dial-up modem, not ethernet. You need to be connected to your netgear via ethernet (or at least wireless) to configure it. In "ifconfig -a", do you have any other adapters, like eth0 or wlan0?

My DSL modem is connected to the WAN port on the router. The PC is connecte from eth0 directly to an open port on the router.

I'd have to tell you what model router when I get home.
