View Full Version : Sound card problems - FC3

I am running FC3 on a Toshiba Satellite laptop. Sometime back I remember that I was able to hear music, but now neither in Gnome nor in KDE can I hear to anything. The sound card detection plays the test sound, but I am unable to hear it.

The specs of the soundcard are:
ATI Technologies Inc, IXP 150 Ac'97

I searched through the posts here to see if there were any solutions. Some of the solutions referred to running "alsamixer' from the terminal and checking if all the controls are ok. I tried running 'alsamixer' from the terminal and got this error:
"No Mixer elems found".

I haven't yet understood the role modconf file plays in this context.

What do I do next? Does anyone know of some place wherein I can read more and try out more things?

thanks,

Had a similar problem on fedora core 4 install this week, I solveded it in Gnome (i don't used KDE so can't help with that) In the Volume app on the gnome panel (add it by using the add to panel after a right click on the gnome panel) double click on it.

In the volume control box, choose the Tab Switches and select External Amplifier..

And make sure you turn down the volume before you do this, i nearly blew out my ear drums as my Satellite is plugged into my stereo

I tried the suggestion. Logged into Gnome and then tried accessing "Volume control" in "Sound and Video". But I got an error which is:
"Sorry, no mixer elements and/or devices found"

any suggestions?

Sounds like the soundcard isn't loaded... go to
http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/toshiba.html
See if your toshiba is listed, also have a look at other toshibas as well they will have all sorts of instructions for getting the soundcard working..

I have a similar problem with my Armada 1700 (es1688 soundcard) on FC4 (but also with FC3) that I've been working on with the folks at the linuxjunior forum. You can check out http://www.linuxjunior.org/yabbse/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=10571;st art=0#lastPost
to see what we've been trying. So far, none of it has worked for me, but it might for you, if you change some settings. To what, I have no idea.

Same problem. New Fedora 4 install on Dell XPS B866 with SB Audigy 2. Card detected under Gnome and visual indication of playback but no sound. Swapped sound cards, speakers/earphones and still no joy. Sounds like a bug or configuration error. Any advice?

Thanks...

Try running "alsamixer" as root from the terminal. Turn everything up to max, then press escape to quit. Play the sound again. If it works this time, run "/sbin/alsactl store" to save the settings.

thanks. tried it. still no playback. Still finds the card and sets the controls, though. any other ideas?
