Hey guys-
Not an FAQ Question, but wouldn't it be cool to make up some Fedora shirts or something, using the Fedora font and maybe with that BlueHat that someone made, with a cool design we could set up a cafepress shop or something, what do I know.
Just thought a Fedora shirt might be a cool thing to sport.

I'd wear it, if it were cool enough.
I think they're going to have shirts at the LinuxWorld in NY, too.
Of course, I'd like the blue hat. That would be really neat.

I was just searching around the other day wonderin' why these don't already exist. I'd buy a couple. Case badges/stickers would be cool too. I need one to cover the mark left from the windows sticker I peeled off of my laptop

I would buy it if I can get it anyhow here in Estonia. Of course the price should be reasonable. For example I can make a transfer by e-gold and someone buys it for me and sends by post or something like that. But it when the shirts will be ready if they will.

I would purchase a few t-shirts myself. Are the t-shirts going to come in black also?
How big are the stickers going to be?

I did. http://www.cafepress.com/fedoraforum
Right now it has a shirt, mug, and a hat with either FedoraForum.org or Tux or both on them.
And they ship worldwide.
I don't think they have black shirts though. :(
I'll gladly accept high resolution images of new designs.
I'll also make sure any proceeds go to Fedora Forum.

Nice! Good to see you set up a store. As far as a new design, I don't have one, but personally I would like "Fedora Core" or "Fedora Project" text instead of Tux. :)

That or we could get a high-res bluehat. Or just keep Tux. :D

I want a fedora tshirt too. I dont want to get one from cafeexpress though, I want to print my own. I own a screen printing business, and I want a HIGH quality real screen printed shirt, not an iron on print. I am 34 years old, just got into fedora and linux, and I love it. Depending on the quantity, I could easily beat the price and quality of what cafeexpress is selling them, we would have to get bulk orders though, but that could all be figured out. Anyways, I just want to know if someone already has the artwork, I can draw it myself, but if someone already has a nice quality drawing in coreldraw or illustrator that would be cool. a white tshirt at cafeexpress with shipping in a 4x (I like them oversize) is 21 dollars, thats crazy, plus white sux. my site is dunriteprinting.com in case someone wants to check out that I am real, although I dont maintain it, and I normally just do local stuff, keeps me more than busy. right now my biggest customers are coke (local) and little caesers. Does anyone know if I need to get permission from anyone to print and sell these shirts, I know they would sell like crazy

You should get in touch with the marketing project (http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Marketing) (they also have a mailing list). They would love to work with you for some quality merchandise.

Shouldn't there be an "official" Fedora Core shirt?
The FedoraForum shirt design is... boring.
I would really like to have a Fedora shirt... right now, I don't have any distro-specific shirts, except for my Red Hat Linux shirt. :(

Thanks Jman, I will check that out.
Hopefully they will let me print their design even if they decide to use someone else. I dont care about making money on this, I just want to see some good distro shirts. Besides printing shirts is pretty rewarding, it is very cool when you see someone wearing a shirt you printed. I will be at the mall or something and point them out to my girlfriend. She is like "I know honey, it is a very nice shirt too..." shes funny, probably wants to tell me to stick a sock in it, because I point them out all the time, but she humors me...

the cafepress stuff that's currently being offered .. well is pretty boring :)
is there any way someone can spice that junk up, possibly offer more "not-so bland" attire..
sorry kids, I don't golf , I don't messenger, I'm not female, and that trucker hat is rediculous.. no one wears those. :P
the fedoraforum black hat is appealing, but I don't wear hats unless it's enforced where I work - and it's not .. the coffe mug is boring too. can't we get a real design on the cup to have something more then just the black font "fedoraforum" on it.

Man you're not kidding! Do you realize how much money I've spent developing this darned-near world class beer gut! I'm talking about 40 or so years of pouring gallons of beer down my throat, night after night; year after year. A man should be PROUD of a fine outstanding beer belly. It shows that you care about yourself. It shows that you care about your family. Beer contains alcohol. Alcohol kills germs. Germs cause disease if they're not killed. I have a family to support. I can't do that very well if I let myself get sick. So I drink beer. Lots of it. It's for the children. My beer gut is my badge of honor and shows that I care about myself and my family. Exercise (like jogging) can destroy a perfectly beer gut. Stay away from that stuff. Exercise can raise your heart rate, which can increase blood pressure and everybody knows how harmful high blood pressure is to a person's health. Beer is made of pure water and nature's grains. It's organic. It's a lot like bread which has been called "the staff of life." You need grain, water and yeast to make either one. Beer is health food and the effects should never be compromised by exercise.
Think about it this way. Take some phony vitamins. Something like vitamin C or B or E or whatever. Half an hour later, do you feel any better? No! Drink a six pack of good cold beers and how do you feel? I'll tell you. You are smarter and healthier and stronger than you were since the last time you had that much beer. And the women are also more beautiful and they all want to make love with you.
Now if you want to hear about the advantages of smoking tobacco....
Obviously just (sort of) kidding,
Oh, to keep this post on topic, I would also be very interested in Fedora case badges and maybe even a T-shirt. I do have a "I am Fedora" tee that I got at FUDCon Boston last April. It's nice, but there's no Tux or any penguin on it, neither is there a blue fedora, though I really doubt that Fedora/RedHat would be happy about a blue fedora.

Be completely honest with us now... exactly how hard have you tried? One email? Two? This is what is meant by following through.
As I've done in the past and as has been mentioned in this thread, simply print the frigging shirts. You'll hear from someone soon enough if they're concerned about it.

By the way, I think your shirt ideas are really good, I like them. I think your best bet would be a tshirt shop. A place that does one at a time, usually you can find these places in the mall. You just bring them the artwork and they print it out onto the tshirt, or they make a transfer and then heat transfer it onto the shirt.
A screen printing shop would need to make screens, that is the most expensive and time consuming portion of the job. Plus an actual screen printing shop is going to need approval to print the artwork, since they are trademarks.
We print designs all the time for trademarked items, but we always need some kind of letter or even email that shows the person that the person that is having us print the shirts is allowed to print them.

I have sent more than a couple of emails. I'm part of threads, and forums also. Every response I have gotten back said the use of the fedora logo is stricly prohibited because it is trademarked by redhat.
It has nothing to do with following through, it has to do with the law. I do this for a living, and I'm not going to put my business on the line for some t-shirts. Besides the "law" factor, how would you like to start a company and have someone use your logo and start selling items with your logo on them? It is a morales issue.
I hear about Screen printers losing everything all the time, because they thought they would make a couple of bucks and printed up some copyrighted logos to sell them. They do it once, and think they got away with it, then people show up and consficate all the shirts, screens, computers, and anything else they want. Then the Screen printer can't even work. A few weeks later they get served papers to appear in court. Why in the world would I want to spend a bunch of money to make shirts and then get sued by Redhat just to lose everything?
I have plenty of legitimate work, it is only because I am a Fedora user that I would want to print the shirts.
Besides, it is the resposibility of the person ordering the shirts from me that needs the permission. So since you are in this thread, how hard have you tried? I imagine not at all right? It's easy to sit back and tell everyone else they are not trying hard enough right? Why don't you get the permission you need and then order the shirts?

man, you make my knees weak when you talk tough like that. I feel kind of funny inside, like when I climb the rope in gym class.
You're right, it's easy to pass judgement. It's also easy to make a peanut butter & jelly sandwich. I've done both and both have served me well.
If the urge strikes me strongly enough, I'll go have a shirt printed. I've done it before and so far, I've become nobody's ***** in prison because of it. I also won't lose sleep over the issue of morals at stake. As anyone who's printed shirts in quantities like we're talking will tell you, it's a money pit, so you're obviously doing it for the love of the subject on the shirt and only hoping to cover the costs.
Finally, keep in mind that this pleasurable exchange of posts came about because I said I'd buy a frigging shirt. Not because I wanted to discuss the risk of your morals and future worldwide reputation at the next annual screenprinters guild meeting because you pasted a penguin to a t-shirt.

You should go have a shirt printed, there is nothing wrong with that at all. The more Fedora shirts out there the better. It's when you try to sell them that you get in trouble. I don't think you would get jail time either, it is usally a fine only.
Pasting a frigging penquin on a shirt is fine too, it's just the Fedora or Redhat logo that would get you busted.
Your right, I would be printing them for the love of the subject, but also to put some money in my pocket. I think Fedora is awesome, and I tell everyone I know about it, and use it everyday.
I would think that someone could easily sell a thousand shirts though, and when people find out they can buy shirts for 5 bucks and sell them for 15 it's certainly not a money pit.

If that's the case, you shouldn't be looking to put a few bucks in your pockets from the shirts. You should provide them under the GPL(v3) and provide the screens and graphics files to anyone who wants them. This would show your deep regard for the GNU and what it stands for. It would also most likely bankrupt you, but these are details we'll work out in later versions of the shirt.

lol, that's a really good idea. Originally when I contacted Fedora about the shirts, I gave them the prices and the amount I would donate off each shirt back to them, and I realized right away they could care less about the money, since there reply was about ten words long with 9 of the words being trademark.

You've got to deal with nicer companies, my good man. You're hanging out with a bad element.
When I wanted to make shirts, hats and whatnot for a certain Swedish motorcycle, they told me to go to town. Then I bought the .org of their brand name and again they said rock on. I've used their name on a lot of stuff, and they've been totally cool, sometimes supplying me the vector graphics.
I'm not bashing Fedora. They can protect whatever the hell they want. I know it happens as I owned one of the thousands of enthusiast sites that VW shut down. I'm simply stating that practices like that would cause me not to want to bother to promote their wares. The penguin works fine for my tastes, anyways.

Your completely right, I was pretty disappointed in Redhat, just goes to show Fedora is Redhat, which means big business, and forget the little guy. I'm not bashing Fedora either, because they are awesome, and by far my favorite distro, but when ever big companies get involved **** like this happens.

I am thinking about opening a cafepress site with Linux wares, including as many distros as are willing to supply graphics, and I found this thread. My idea is to charge 1 to 5 bucks (depending on price range) over cost, then donate the profits to various Linux efforts. Distros who opt in would get the donation for merchandise sold with their logo. I would reimburse myself for expenses only, and get to be proud of myself for finding a way to "do my part". Cafepress will even manufacture Linux distro CD sets with full color printing on CD for $4.99 per CD. I would charge $1 over per CD and donate it to the Distro team.
Can anyone think of any reason I shouldn't proceed with this? Should I register a non-profit org? Am I going to have to do a lot of elaborate bookkeeping? I've never done anything like this before, but it seems like it should be as simple as just doing it, but nowadays people are being sued for just about everything, and I don't want to be a statistic. Any suggestions?
