I have tried installing FC4 on my new AMD that I just built and keep coming up with this error message

CPU 0: Machine Check Exception: 0000000000000004
Bank 4: b200000000070f0f
Kernel panic - not syncing: CPU context corrupt

Now after getting this error I installed Ubuntu without a problem and SUSE 9.1 without a problem. I have tried FC4 install graphic and text mode and both come up with this error. Any advice on what this is and how to get around it would be appreciated.

I have built many pc using the AMD chips and I strongly suggest you to re-check your bios settings or try using the default settings....

I have already tried it with the default settings and that's when I get the error message. The only thing that I have changed since then is the boot order for Hard Drive and DVD rom drive.

If you still have the mb manual go thru it again and see where you can catch the error but it could be hardware related. BTW, at what speed did you burn cds? I recommend max of 24x or less.

I have encountered this same error message before on Fedora Core 3 on a stock 2.6.11 kernel on the second pc im my sig. It was a clean install as I recall. I was yumming my system, booted into a new kernel, more yumming and then bam, the error came up. That's all I remember.

I didn't touch my BIOS, and it was an NFS install and I couldn't reproduce the error.

whenever I burn an iso image I always burn at 16x I don't know why but I always seem to do it. There wasn't any errors on the drive when burning and a buddy actually used the same install discs to put it on his P4 machine he just built.

Dumb question - did you check the ISO images for checksums?

Hm, try memtest86.

tried memtest86 which I had running for a little over 10 hours while I was at work and no errors at all. I checked for a Bios update for the motherboard which there is one available which just came out I'm going to try that when I get off work tonight. Could the bios be causing this error?

For the BIOS update instructions they give step by step instructions when upgrading using windows. Being that I have linux I won't have a DOS prompt as stated in the instructions. How do I update the BIOS using linux?

Boot to a DOS diskette. If you don't have on, try bootdisk.com.

Went to bootdisk.com and everything is in .exe format. How would I make a bootable image off of that?

Well, I guess you need access to either a Microsoft OS, or a wine-equipped Linux system. Do you have either?
