In my opinion, the best resolution for your monitor is that which looks and feels best on your eyes. I have a 17" monitor and played with the resolutions a bit until deciding on 1280x1024. That just seemed to offer the most screen "real estate" with the best readability. So, my advice is to choose what best works for you.
Hope this helps.

That depends on you eyes and taste....I use 1024x768 and if monitor brand not present I use the generic lcd or crt drivers.
