I've set up a network share on an XP box, and I mount it as a samba share on my Linux box. When I try and play the mp3s stored in the share using xmms they play, but randomly they will simply stop playing, cutting out annoyingly.

This is irritating to say the least and seems completely random. The connection is a wireless one for the Linux box, but the XP box is connected to the router via cable.

It sounds like a bandwidth issue to me. The connection might not be stable enough to stream it to you. if you are running other net apps, or even downloading new tunes at the same time, might want to shut that off and see how it goes.

I'm literally the only person on this network, and it's a 802.11g connection. Perhaps it is a streaming issue, but I thought XMMS would have better management. Can I set up a virtual filesystem of some kind to help deal with this?

It's probably the SMB protocol itself - it's not really designed for continuous high-bandwidth performance. That and the Linux SMB implementation simply cannot include any tweaks Microsoft may have made to improve performance - between Microsoft-based machines.

Since I don't have any Windows machines, the only thing I can tell you is that NFS works just fine for this (currently listening to "Garbage").
