View Full Version : Mini + FC4 (Airport and Fan shutdown?)

My friend and I are Linux users who have been seduced by the dark side (he is Debian and I am Red Hat/Fedora). We both have Mac Mini's.

I have downloaded the FC4 DVD iso (after experiencing wget's 2 GB limit and curl/rsync not working at work behind the firewall). The sha1sum was correct though :-)

I have read posts stating that the cooling fan never stops spinning on FC4, and Airport doesn't work.

Airport isn't really a concern for me, but it is for my friend. Does it work out of the box, or easy enough? Are any URLs going to be helpful?

Is the cooling fan spinning 24/7 a worry? Does that mean the CPU is likely to overheat?

the fan running 24/7 is beginning to worry me a bit especially when the qld summer swings round (especially in the tropics) so i've been hammering google for a bit to no avail

airport, i think your best bet is ndiswrapper

Airport WILL NOT WORK. PERIOD. The driver is in the works, but it will be almost 2 years by my estimates.

Is the cooling fan spinning 24/7 a worry? Does that mean the CPU is likely to overheat?
If anything, I think the fan running 24/7 would keep the CPU cooler than it really needs to be. :confused:

Does the fan running 24/7 count as a bug, and if so, how does it get reported?

It's not ideal - it's not how the hardware was designed to be used, nor the way Apple intended it to be. I would classify it as a bug, and I dont know weather the kernel developers are aware of it.

I want silence (semi-media centre style), and if the cooling fan isnt shut down by the kernel, what else isn't being done? The processor not sleeping certain cycles when it's not busy? Still unsure if I should proceed with FC4 installation quite yet, but I'm happy enough learning how to use OS X for the immediate time being.

It's on my X86 boxes though :-)

Other than the fan, I've had no issues. Overall a much better experience that Yellow Dog Linux, although it looks like they've just released a new version that I haven't played with yet.
