Seve,

I've been trying to install nVidia drivers on a fresh FC4 system with an FX5700 card. Any help on how you did it?

Thanks ...

I just added the Livna repository and used the instructions for installed the nvidia driver at fedorafaq.org (link in my sig... their yum.conf doesn't work with FC4).

I tried the Livna repository RPM's for FC4. Although they installed OK, the system thru a X error on re-boot. I tried running the driver script from Nvidia, it requires the kernel source which I could not find.

yum install automake gcc kernel-devel (or kernel-smp-devel if you have smp system)

ln -s /usr/src/kernels/2.6.11-1.1369_FC4-x86_64 /usr/src/linux (adjust as required if smp)
get the nvidia driver from: http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html
as root init 3
sh NVIDIA-Linux-yadda-yadda
edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Hi:

I think the other folks have pretty much covered it as I am a little late in getting back here. The only oddity that my original Nvidia install on a fresh install of FC4, was that I had to turn off Selinux, so the Xserver could load afterwards {don't know why}.

I had all the required dependencies loaded beforehand {due to what I chose to install from the CDs and prior knowledge, i.e. FC2, FC3} therefore, no problems installing the driver. I always use the Nvidia site release and not one of the 3rd party packaged ones, so I can't help you there. On the upgrade to 1.0-7667 I just killed X, logged in as root, init 3, cd /directory and sh ...Nvidia..... run etc. Once installed I did a modprobe nvidia from the command line [as I did not want to redo my xorg.conf file, or nvida-settings], init 5 to restart X and all was well. Took less than a minute.

BTW, I did not have to turn of Selinux as with the previous driver install to allow the Xserver to load.

So if i already have nvidia driver installed and i want to upgrade to the latest one without losing my xorg.conf settings all i have to do is "/sbin/modprobe nvidia" after installing the newest driver? I thought that when installing the new driver it won't affect my xorg.conf. So, asking just in case.

Ok, I did the 7664 drivers on a fresh install of x86_64 when it came out

ran the NVIDIA installer
edit xorg

reboot it worked great with UT and stuff. Now that the 7667 are out I uinstalled the 7664 and then ran 7667, it works fine for 2d but now when i go into UT2k4 its slow as all hell

lsmod reveals nvidia is running but it just seems slow as all hell like unplayable. running a 6600gt.

do we have to do like rpm -e --nodeps xorg-x11-Mesa-libGL to remove the mesa xorg libraries like we did in fc3 in order to run properly? Or why cant I play games now all of a sudden?

Hi:

Once you have completed the driver install from Nvidia and it says it is complete and it returns you to the command prompt then all you have to do is type modprobe nvidia [you will see some information on the screen after you hit enter indicating it is loading the new driver etc.] hit enter, then type init 5 hit enter and the Xserver will start and you should be good to go with your previous xorg.conf configuration intact. If you do not do modprobe nvidia then it will not load when you restart X and you will be forced to reconfigure xorg.conf to what you want it to be. Other people may experience different results, I don't know...however, each time I have changed drivers and left out the modprobe nvidia step, I have had to recofigure xorg.conf to operate properly. The steps and commands have changed over time as FC, kernels and Nvidia keep evolving, all I know for an absolute is that for me updating from the previous version of Nvidia drivers to the new ones as I described was a breeze in FC4. As with anything, your mileage may vary.

I haven't tried these drivers, but the 7664 drivers on my FC3, 2.6.11.2 with Geforce2 MX 200/400 would install but totally stuffed around X. Garbled text on shutdown screens, couldn't go back to init 3 from runlevel 5, because of garbled text.
I found going back to 7174 solved all of these problems and it worked fine. The latest and greatest drivers are not always the best if your hardware/software is not really current.

:(

Linva baseurl for FC4 is different from FC3 yum.conf. Install this Livna repository (http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/4/i386/RPMS.lvn/livna-release-4-0.lvn.2.4.noarch.rpm) and you are set. fedorafaq.org is outdated on that issue.

I am getting a problem when running ut2004. My comp has an athlon 64 3000+ and a GeForce 6600GT 128MB. I run ut2004 in 1.0.7664 and I get about 90+ FPS (1280x1024, max video settings in everything). I updated to 1.0.7667 and now I get about 10 fps average in the same game? Anybody else has had this problem as well? Any ideas on how to fix it?

Sounds to me like when you installed the new drivers OpenGL became disabled. Using the Livna drivers my glxgears framerate stayed the same. I presume their latest FC4 package contains the new Nvidia drivers.
