View Full Version : [FC4] Problems

We are seeing a lot of duplicate threads covering common FC4 issues.

Can I suggest we start a sticky thread and limit post creation to a select few? We can then have a single thread containing solutions to common problems in an easy to find spot?

One classic example is the blank virtual temrinal issue. I answer 2 new threads today alone on this one.

Oh, maybe we include a link to http://fedorasolved.com or steal (in a GPL/GNU kind of way) the solutions contained within.

as a frequent poster this doesn't sound like a bad idea. i have a text file i keep over here with the links to the threads of come common FC4 issues that paste and post in reply to many issues. specifically JAVA (32 and 64bit), FLASH, and YUM repo questions/howto's.

Sounds good!

I like the concept of fedorasolved.com and I quote:PostPosted: Fri Oct 20, 2000 7:01 pm Post subject: Quick 'rules' for posting, to keep us all on the same page. Reply with quote
For a long time I have wanted to do this but didn't have the time.
This week I made the time.

This forum is only for fixes to the Fedora Core distribution. There should be no questions about 'how do I do this", 'where do I get that', etc....there is enough of that out there already.

That said, here's the quick list of guidelines:

1. Post only solutions not questions.
2. Don't post any questions in response to a posted fix, it will just clutter up the idea of Fedora Solved.
3. Keep your 'subject' line to the point, i.e. "Nvidia driver 6629 yellow line fix - Kernel xxxx.x.x.x'
4. Feel free to post an alternative SOLUTION to the fix proposed, but please do not ask questions unless you absolutely can't stand it and simply must for some reason.
5. Feel free to discuss the fix if you think it is incorrect, but please tell us why you think this. Give reasons.
6. Keep it civil.
7. Most importantly, use it and share. So much clutter, so little time.

That's it.

I hope this forum will be of some help to those of us spending interminable amounts of time googling for answers.

Free to all, enjoy.

that would work.. or they could replace the "Fedora Core 4 Test" forum with a "Fedora Core 4 Answers" forum and sticky the submitted solutions at the top. then that way each one can also be replied to and discussed/refined.

Keep a text file just for this forum, that's a good Idea

I don't really think they will make it a sticky though, moderators seem to be rather reluctant to make threads sticky (at least from what I've heard)

And besides, you should just write a how-to on the subject and leave it up there.

Eventually, people will see it.

If not, point them to your how-to. They they will start pointing other people toward the how-to, until you have a rather large army

Just my
Rs. 1.2 (Roughly $0.02)

Keep a text file just for this forum, that's a good Idea yeah i got tired of hunting for the same post over and over everytime the same question was asked.

and what you suggested is pretty much how i'm doing it now although i have *very* seriously considered writing up several detailed how-to's and posting them up on my personal site but i am unsure about 2 things: 1) is that a generally accpeted practive here and 2) if my internet connection would handle it since my site runs a server here under my desk

maybe ill try it. if not, ive still got my text file :D

Why not write the HOWTOS, and post them in the HOWTOs sub-forum here?

Tip: Name all your HOWTO threads starting with [FC4]

well technically all of them are already here in one form or another as i wrote them to replies to various questions. should i just take them and re-post them in the how-to section?

Yep. If your taking someone else original fix, give them credit in the HOWTO.

I just wish that there was a page (maybe a wiki) that is something like:

List of all problems solved in the How-To Forum
1) Managing yum (yes, I am still exited about it)
2) nVidia drivers
3) Virtual terminal
..........

And seriously, what is the question?

If there should be a large thread for FC4 problems?

I just realised how unpractical that would be

It would run into 30 odd pages, and most of the solutions would be somewhere in the middle

And lets not forget about newbies who just add thanks (making it even harder), or Worse, say "this doesn't work", not having mentioned what problem,
EDIT: just realised, you solved this problem, but then again, if you restrict posting access, then this is no longer an open forum. You can never tell who will have a good solution. You could always lock the how-to

I would suggest each release gets its own forum. Its kinda sucky to find the FC2 posts mixed up with new FC4 troubles.

I think it would make it easier to find a fix for your specific version

No, read my original idea again. Only FC4, only solutions. Would be 1-2 pages at most.

Can't we get some space at fedoraproject.org/wiki ???
We are planning on making documentation for fedora....
