Power Mac G3 won't reboot after installing Fedora C4
Dear Mac geeks,
I finally had Fedora C4 installed on my G3
Everything went well until it reboot for the 1st time.
The famous Mac blue folder with ? and smiling face shows on the screen.
After that it shows 4 options for second stage boot:
l for Fedora Core
e for CDROM
n for Network
o for OpenFirmware
I enter l for Fedora Core boot, but it seems like keep coming back to this screen.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Hi Breathe,
I can't get into the system to look up this file. It won't boot. It falls in to endless loop for the second stage boot.
Thanks.

You could use OSX disk tools to partition the drive. Then choose manually partition drive with DiskDruid and just edit the partitions you want to use with FC4. That's what I did. You want at least a swap partition for linux, and one big partition for linux. For example, the 40G drive in my iMac is set for 18.5G OSX, 18.5G FC4, and 1G swap (40G drives don't really have 40G on them). Don't worry about the format of the partition in OSX disk tools, just make the partition. DiskDruid will set the format when you edit the partition in the installer. I set the main FC4 partition to ext3 and the swap to swap. Actually, I originally tried ReiserFS, but the installer said ReiserFS wasn't available later when it went to format the partitions, so I went back to ext3.

Does this affect G4 Power Macs as well? I have a G4 (blue-grey with the "handles" on the corners) here, I wanted to install FC4 onto.
At the first installation attempt, it reported an error while writing the partition table (don't know the exact errormessage, since I didn't do the first attempt) but after a reboot, it could install with out any glitches. After the installation, the machine wouldn't boot but just show the blue background, with the foldersymbol and the questionmark.
I tried to install FC4 again, this time, I could partition the disc without any glitch and all went smoothly...until the final reboot. Again, the machine doesn't come up and all I get is the folder with the questionmark.
Is my G4 a "problem child" like the G3s in the bugzilla report or is there something else going on?
Cheers
Tom

I'm in the same boat. My 2001 iMac won't even boot. I can't boot from any CDROM. Does anyone have a firmware solution to force boot the CDROM?

The problem was the FC 4 1 of 5 disk. The iMac wouldn't read it. So I had to replace it. Once I got to the linux boot screen "linux cdrom" worked without any issues.
