View Full Version : Which version is faster?

I have an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (Socket 754) with 1GB of RAM (PC3200).

The main task of this machine is going to be sound recording. (Probably using Audacity, because I require multitracking software). I will also be doing video encoding, but to a lesser degree.

My question is, should I run the 32 bit version (x86) or the 64 bit (x86_64) version of Fedora Core 4?

I would think that the 64 bit version would make greater use of my hardware... is this true?

The realaity IMO would be a dual Xeon with HT.
That is a heavy load requiremet and the AMD doesn't multiple thread. The 64 bit is not ready for Prime time and the apps are still 32 bit anyway.
With dual Xeon HT you would have a very smotth running machine and the problems of recording and editing would be much reduced.

The minium would be Pent IV 2.8 HT.

yes of course.

why buy 64 bit if you dont want to use it.

also the floating point math calculations used in encoding audio/video are definatly faster in 64 bit

i would recomend compiling any audio/video software that you plan on using to optimise it for your hadware/kernel ----- plus take atvantage of the new GCC4

if you could list your hardware more specificly so as to help

Hmmm, but what would be the best bet if I didn't want to go out and buy new hardware?

since you have 64 bit then the most logical thing to do is stick with 64bit software

you can always upgrade that way
to go from 32 to 64 you would have to do clean install
and with a 6-9 month release cycle that is not good

when i was waiting for fc4 to come out i tried the 32 bit version of fc4 test3 and the 64bit

64 was much snapier

Some people just don't get the question...

I would go with the 64 bit version, and if posible compile everything you can for 64bit, i'm still using FC3 and once i got the nvidia drivers working it is running like a dream (something i can't say about XP). I'm also setting mine up for video editing and DVD burning but there is too little time in the day and to much to do.

I have a Duel Opteron 246 (2Ghz) with 1Gig RAM on a Tyan Tiger board...

Well, yeah, three times the hardware cost should do it. :)
And you even have 2 threads running now.

What's a compile?
Is that easy to do?
Can you explain to me?
I'm just an artist. :)

What software are you using to burn DVDs? k3b?

Awesome! No wonder it runs fast! :)

and soon i'll be able to put 2 more in soon... :)

Just as a matter of interest, all the Windows app for video and dvd burning only use one thread, the 2nd CPU just handle the mundane windows crap while there other does the work (in my case that isn't much, only ran about 50-70% and it was processing it faster than it can play it).

I have not had a chance to do any on FC3 yet, (i have a new baby and i'm in the middle of exams)

Under XP i use Power Director (came with the nvidia FX 5700 256meg) to create the MPeg files and ULead DVD Factory for the DVD encoding.

It was the bigest and best investment i made in computers, went from an PIII 733 with 512meg to this, it also has 3 x 120gig SATA raid drive for windows and a Nvidia FX 5700 256meg as well as 2 monitors (not to boast or anything).

I has to last me about 3-5 years (agreement with the wife).

Hehe yeah. I'm hoping my current system will last my until 2010.

But we'll see...
