Also how much HDD will a complete Install take up???

mirrors.kernel.org is very fast indeed. I was going to go the torrent route but while there were lots and lots of peers, speed was average at best.
Didnt know FC4 was released until late today and figured I would DL it and then install it later. While I am still having some issues in FC3 (I cannot say 'with' as I dont know), if there are more issues with the upgrade than it solves, I am content to wait until the kinks are worked out. If there arent any, those CDs are going in tomorrow :o)
But anyways... I must say that while I dreaded the coming of the monster known as XP (apologies to the monsters out there), and the eventual drop of W2K support, I look upon FC4 a good thing. Tho personally I would have called it v3.5. That way 3 wont already look like old technology, which its not. Like FC, NT used major versions but were spaced apart pretty good. If MS is smart they will have an XP2 whenever their latest and greatest is supposed to be released instead of some new acronym.
Next year: "FC" will be dropped and "PTZ" will be the new OS! ;o)

My bugs are mainly related to the fact that upgraded instead of a clean re-install. I had heaps of crap that I didnt want to get rid off thats all. I also cbf re-installing so with that I had issues.

14th June 2005, 02:59 PM

so now i can say, FC4 is a complete operating system for thinkpad.

Fedora Core 4 does NOT ship with XMMS, you must install from
the Fedora Extras (http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/extras/4/i386/)
or from some other location.
If you use the Fedora Extras site, there will be NO MP3 plugin.
The RPMs for FC3 from freshrpms will work and include MP3 support:
http://heidelberg.freshrpms.net/rpm.html?id=400
http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrpms/fedora/linux/3/xmms/
Get:
xmms-1.2.10-9.1.1.fc3.fr.i386.rpm
xmms-mp3-1.2.10-9.1.1.fc3.fr.i386.rpm
xmms-skins-1.2.10-9.1.1.fc3.fr.i386.rpm
Run:
[root@charon fc4]# rpm -ivh xmms-*
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
1:xmms ########################################### [ 33%]
2:xmms-mp3 ########################################### [ 67%]
3:xmms-skins ########################################### [100%]
If you want the XMMS status plugin for Gnome, go here:
http://newrpms.sunsite.dk/apt/redhat/en/i386/fc3/RPMS.newrpms/xmms-status-plugin-1.0-2.rhfc3.nr.i386.rpm
Get:
xmms-status-plugin-1.0-2.rhfc3.nr.i386.rpm
Run:
[root@charon fc4]# rpm -ivh xmms-status-plugin-1.0-2.rhfc3.nr.i386.rpm
Restart xmms:
Options > Preferences > General Plugins
Status Docklet Plugin 1.0 [libstatusdocklet.so]
==> Check [ ] Enable Plugin
Apply

hey,
I don't like it, but don't hate it either. Im having probs installing libmcrypt and PHP on it, b/c I have tp customize the PHP options, can't use RPMs... But, nice speed increase! Also, (bad thing) file-roller is messed up... Try "extract" --> It will extract into the folder highlighted, even if you didn't double click. AKA, you can't double click the "Home" folder on the side bar to extract in home, b/c it'll extract to a subdir of home. It's retarted.
