View Full Version : Fedora Core 4 is sitting on the mirrors

The read-to-download version of Fedora Core 4 is on the mirrors, but of course is locked until ......
foolish
10th June 2005, 06:57 PM
Well, of course. This is how distribution to mirrors work, and have always worked. It'll sit on the mirrors untill the release, which is noonish monday. It'll be released on most of the mirrors over a short time period to reduce load on each individual mirror.

edit: just checked, dvd.iso and cd1.iso both show as 649mb when i start the DL. ill pass on the sneak-peak for now. got a few more things to mess around with on my t3 install to see if i can break it before updating anyway.

Yeah the download is slow because there must be many people who are trying to download from this one unlocked mirror. I am within the university network. Really fast download for me.
There is a dvd iso too. check it out.

that mirror isnt supposed to be live until monday. so no torrents yet unless somebody has put out an unofficial 1.
looks like i might have to try these cd's "legal" or not. forgot to turn off nightly yum update and now have some fc5 stuff messing up my install. 1389 kernel, no bluecurve login screen, etc.

I usually manage to find at least one at the list of mirrors:
http://fedora.redhat.com/download/mirrors.html
This time it was relatively easy, I only had to try 5 or 10 foreign servers, starting at the bottom. When FC3 was released, it was much harder.

I checked the signature on the SHA1SUM file, and it's a good. Haven't finished the download of the FC4-i386-disc?.iso files yet so I can't say that the sha1sum's match, but based on past experience, it doesn't get pushed out to the mirrors unless RH decided it was final (though if there was some really bad bug discovered at the last minute, they could theoretically push out new versions and disavow anything released before Monday, since anyone possessing it was naughty).

Download finished, the 4 sha1sum's check. BTW, the signature date on the SHA1SUM file, and the dates on the files on the server, is June 7. The only reason this wasn't released on June 6 was concern over whether the name of the release (Stentz) would cause problems, so it's not too likely that last-minute bugs will cause a recall.

Will the minimum system requirement for FC4 be any different than FC3? Actually, what is the system requirement for FC4?
I am running FC3 on a 850 mhz Athlon system with 512mb of RAM. Disk space is not a problem for me since I have a 120gb hdd just for this Linux operation.
Thanks.

So, i just have to know.
Why is everybody so anxious about the release of FC4? Is it just because it is something new? is there some new feature which is going to revolutionize the Linux world?
My guess is that it is just something new. I've been using Linux now since Red Hat 6.1, and everytime a new version is released the mirrors are flooded for a few weeks. My personal experience has been that the new releases have a graphical change or two, but all-in-all, it's about 95% the same as the past version......hence I never see the reason to scramble to the first in line.

Always wipe the test version before installing a release version. Test versions are for development, testing and bug-reporting, only.
btw: My FC4 install went fine. Looks like the open mirrors are hosting the real-deal. Got mine from Bittorrent (only took 4 hours). Still have to wait for the yum repos to catch up though.

Hehe this looks promising, and seems to be the real thing, judging from what I've read. Can anyone who is successfully running it post the output of 'uname -a' please? Still I'm a little wary after someone mentioned the delay was due to a kernel problem. How did you find that out? Can you give us a brief summary of what the problem is? I too assumed it was just a naming issue. If this is indeed real, there are a few site owners out there who are going to be a little embarressed!

2.6.11I read that 2.6.12RC5 would be in it
Edit: browsed the readme and found this: The Fedora Core is based on a 2.6.11 kernel. Fedora Core may include additional patches for improvements, bug fixes, or additional features. For this reason, the Fedora Core kernel may not be line-for-line equivalent to the so-called vanilla kernel from the kernel.org web site.

RedHat (now Fedora) apply upstream patches to their packages, so the 2.6.11 Fedora kernel does actually have many fixes/features of 2.6.12 anyway.

Ok I used the torrent of i386and did a fresh install of fedora..... Doing the normal installation and then I did the usual FC3 NVIDIA install instructions just like FC3... Downloaded 7664 NVIDIA drivers for the FX520.
sh filename.run
comoiled own module rather than going from nvidia ftp server
cd /etc/X11
vim xorg.conf
changed nv to nvidia
commented out dri and glcore and made sure glx was there
and then did modprobe nvidia and it initally loaded. However, there was now nothing to copy over to /etc/udev/devices like there was in FC3 where u would overwrite the files...
so then rebooted it showed the nvidia logo and then it flashed a few times and then x wouldnt display. Searched fedoraforum and I looked in modprobe.conf for what someone recommended about some conflicts, and there was no "/etc/modprobe.conf should have an entry "alias char-major-195* nvidia".
If the entry is "alias char-major-195* nvidia-1_0-7174", drop the -1_0-7174.
If there is a entry "alias nvidia nvidia-1_0-7174", remove it."
So basically the nvidia drivers and x arent working../... anyone have any luck.
Sorry if this sounds a bit jumbled up im just pretty worn out and tired.... I havent tampered with FC4 testing lately so any help on getting nvidia display drivers working with fedora.

wow so all you did was just run the nvidia installer and then edited xorg and everything works fine now? you didnt need to modprobe anything or copy any devices? wow. ill do a fresh install and see if I can confirm this. my process was a little different for installing the nvidia driver.
1) ctrl-alt-f1

5) log in as root
6) sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-7664-pkg2.run
7) change nv to nvidia in xorg.conf
8) reboot
didnt have to do modprobe or copy anything....

Well so far the number of bugs I have found is alarming. uDev really sucks the big one!
1. udev slow at mounting devices
2. udev not notifying Gnome of new mounts (iPod and Flash devices)
3. udev naming issue with iPod
4. Alt-F1-F6 terminals corrupted (unreadable) with green broder
5. gpilotd craches at sync
6. Gnome not updating my desktop when new files added (works initially then dies)
7. "eject" no longer ejects my iPod Mini (could be related to #3)
8. I can no longer browse shared (cups) printers from other RH/FC3 boxes
other than that, looks much the same as FC3.
I didn't expect so many issues with my peripherals, these devices were working fine with FC3.

Hopefully everything will be settled for tommorrow... Would be nice if there is perhaps a udev patch already on up2date or yum. After I mount about 5 thumb drives and 1 USB drive to retrive all my backedup data I should be set for now with udev flash devices until a new patch is out. I think thats the only relevant problem. In FC3 I experience problems with GNOME not updating desktops, i usually just end up opening /home/name/Desktop in nautilus and refresh and then it refreshes desktop and shows up. Hopefully there wont be t hat many other problems.

What they give you on the mirrors is the sha1sum
do sha1sum <file>
you md5sums are correct (at least the 1st one)

I did not know md5sum is being replaced by sha1sum. I had not even heard of sha1sum until now. Lucky I had Cygwin installed under Windows. I used the sha1sum there to check the sha1sums. All the sha1sums checked out fine.
I typed the following command:
$ sha1sum *.iso
The following was output:
3fb2924c8fb8098dbc8260f69824e9c437d28c68 *FC4-i386-disc1.iso

did this occur to just certain files or random ones or what?
What steps did you have to do to properly get flash drives working?
Well now its everything mounted on the fly or any files I drop onto the Desktop indirectly (save from Firefox for example).
Mounting flash drives? Plug them in, they auto-mount, but dont appear on the desktop until I either 1) kill nautilus or 2) click on their icons in the "Computer" folder.

I hate fedora core, I dont know why I am downloading these cd's. I guess I am just hoping this one will be different(I mean less bugs than one, two, three). maybe they will pull a starwars and have a good 4, 5, and 6(and yes I disliked 3).

Bitrain, ByteSniper, our breath is wasted on people like this.
If dc2447 would care to look at: http://fedora.redhat.com/download/mirrors.html
He would see that both of the mirrors that are posted in this thread are official mirrors of RedHat.
People throught this thread have downloaded the 4 isos and they have worked without any problems.
But obviously we are wrong because the end-all be-all demigod dc2447 insists that they don't work.
What can we poor mortals do, but erase what we think is a working copy of FC4.

Now, I also downloaded from the first torrent link that was up and about (though the file itself was on an unofficial site, but was an official torrent btw), sha1sums matched up just fine, burned just fine, read just fine.
I'll be installing FC4 on my rather irritatingly slow p4 tonight or tomorrow (damn i need more ram), and posting up on my experience then. As an aside, anyone with FC4 using wireless hardware?
Just curious how the acx100 drivers are working out, anything silly happening. I'll be installing regardless, but my wifi card is a pain in the ass (hardware itself).

Your assistance? ROFL. Love the arrogance kid, love it.
Didn't have to look at your pprofile to see you were American, god help the world. people like you could have an argument in an empty room.
******.
my arrogance? you come here claiming something totally false and then when you realise you were wrong you start personally insulting those who were trying to help you? im being sterotyped as an American because why? I argue? That's not being American, that's being human. And i might point out that at least I made sure i was correct, before i started arguing and making accusations. when you couldnt find fault in the suggestion that i made you insult me personally becuase it didn't agree with what you originally posted? Yes, i am American and damned proud of it, but at least I don't try to hide where I am from. If you are representative of whatever country you come from i would try to hide it too.
******. Back at ya bud.

Duh!!!! I'm a moronThis is pathetic!
Would someone please close this thread?
This has been 12 pages of bickering, and the original theme of this thread was the early FC4 release, which is no longer of any use
I lived in the US for 10 years, and I do not find Americans any more arrogant than a couple of snobs I've met the world over.
If some idiot kept saying the world was flat, and then everytime someone started correcting him, he just started yelling and insulting people, THAT would be the stereotype you'd fall in.
Where are YOU from anyway?
EDIT: Um, did I misquote you? Well, it's the sprit of the law, not the letter

The personal attacks weren't called for. Simply putting a statement like that should have been backed up with facts. The Sha1sums provided match. People including me have checked the sha1sum's and they match.
You are one of the few that have had issues. Simply stated you downloaded an incorrect version good job on checking the sha1sum's now go and download another copy :D

X died for me too after installing the nvidia driver. I looked over at the nVNews forum and found out that other people are having the same problem. Here is the workaround that worked for me:
# /usr/sbin/setenforce 0
# ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7664-pkg1.run
# /usr/sbin/setenforce 1
