After spending all day trying to get my intel 845G video card built into my mobo to run in 1280x768 resolution, I have decided that it is not worth my time to spend another day working on the problem. Therefore, I need a PCI card that can do this.

I am using Fedora Core 3 and would very much like a recommendation on a PCI video card that will play MPEG-2 video (MPEG-4 would be nice too, for quicktime, xvid, etc...) and run in 1280x768 resolution at at least 70hz. I need PCI because the mobo doesn't have AGP.

1280x768? kind of a very odd resolution and to be honest i dont know that ive ever seen a card that would do that. there is 1600x1200, 1280x1024, 1024x768, 800x600, etc.

1280x768 is widescreen. Most plasma screens and widescreen LCDs support it. I've seen some video cards that support that resolution. Intel 845G (with windows drivers), and the CLE266.

First step, I'd check your monitor setting.

Since this is my 3rd day back in linux after a few years, I wont be much help, but I'd say nvidia - they've had great widescreen support for quite a while now, and you could pick up a gf4 440mx for cheap :D

My Laptop is 1280x800...I am running Kubuntu on it and am only able to get 1280x768...I had to generate a modeline for the xorg.conf file just to get it to that resolution.
I used a utility called gtf...
