As ug_the_caveman has expressed his major discontent with his lack of "fat pipe", I'll start a poll to see what percentage of users are lucky enough to have broadband and those poor souls still stuck on screechy old dialup lines.

Post your comments on speeds and access technologies if you want (i.e. cable *DSL, satellite, TI:eek: etc.)

In my neck of the woods, I use cable broadband which is much faster and cheaper than the alternatives offered here.
I usually average speeds in the range of 1600 - 4000 kbps (150 - 600kBps). depending on the location and load.

The ironic thing is, I was one of the first people in the country to have a 2mbps line! Those were the days, but now I'm on a 56K modem...

My Dad works for British Telecom, the telecommunications company and we managed to get a trial of a 2mbps ADSL line for two years. The great thing about it was that BT paid us to have it, that was really sweet. But since then, we've moved from that house and so have got stuck on 56K.

Currently my connection is so poor, that that XFree86 upgrade via apt is a dream. :(

Since everybody is having a good time tormenting the poor guy and making him jealous of their internet connection I will also join in the bandwagon. :D

I have a 4 Mbps leased line at the office. And in this office there are only 15 people. So downloading ISO's take me something like oh 30 min tops and this is on a bad day :D. I don't even bother with any download manager no wget nothing just right click and save in Mozilla. Never had a broken download. Ahhh Bliss.

And at home I have an ADSL connection but I do have to admit this is slower than the usual ADSL's I only get a 512 Kbps download and 128 Kbps upload. But on the other hand never need to use it since my addiction and all download needs are fulfilled at the office albeit I am stuck on it now since holidays till Tuesday :cool:

Hmm ... well I have more than dialup, but less than broadband (technically) @ 128 kb/s ADSL - about 3x the speed of dialup. With this I get unlimited National traffic but a capped International data allowance of 10 gigs per month.

Now, if I was to go for true broadband ADSL @ 256 kb/s I am allowed a generous 500 MB per month total (national + international) data cap for just under the same price I am currently paying.

You can work out how many months it would take me to download the latest Fedora ISO's considering they are now a 4 CD set at 256 kb/s broadband speeds :rolleyes:

Speed isn't everything ug_the_caveman :p

I'm on cable as well and usually get b/w 150kb/s-400kb/s. Some Canadian communications companies have announced 4mb/s (sp?) service, so that would be very nice but probably expensive. I havn't used dial-up in maybe 8 years.

My local Cable node is relatively uncluttered. So, for the past three years I've enjoyed quite fast speeds. I rarely get anything under 100kBps. :) I was one of the first customers to use Cable once they installed the Cable network to our street.

In England you have to campaign for broadband or you don't get it. BT have set us a trigger level of 500 people in my area to sign up, before they contemplate installing it at the exchange. Its a very rural area, and most people don't have computers as it is.

Currently we've got about 260 people signed up, but thats taken 2 years!

I use Roadrunner via cable modem. Usually get 384k - 512k down and 128k up. Suites my needs. I can usally get iso within 30 45 minutes.

File downloads rated by Windows as between 40kbps to 60 kbps tops. I used this to download the Fedora ISOs - did one per day - guess they took a couple of hours each whilst I was out.

Link to NetGear router using 802.11b wireless (10 MBPs-ish) - signal strength and quality does vary for no known reason.

Very painful to go back to dial-up - I would only use that to read Web mail if I was stuck.

Ah before you feel the effects of consolation let me tell you what I meant by slower than normal ADSL's. The advertised speed of the connection is 512kbps download and 128 upload but what I usually achieve is 300 kbps download and upload who cares don't upload so much.

So before the consolation washes over you allow me to bring you down to earth :D. 300 kbps is slow compared to what some of the other guys have advertised for ADSL. :D But still at least 6 time s faster than plain old dialup :D

I don't have any special optimisations. I'm on Optus cable in Kenmore, Brisbane and the test I quoted is hosted on Optus, so you'd expect it to be good.

I tried the tests you listed:

bandwidthplace: 1.3 Mega bits / sec
cnet: 1541 kilo bits / sec
the pitstop one requires some kind of subscription or login, being US, it would be slow anyway

Bastards, all of u. I have cable, but its kinda like pseudo cable. I get like 380 kilo bits, and only like 50 kilobytes a sec. It took like 3-4 hours for each fedora iso. I envy u bastards that have megabit connections ,here theyre like 60 bucks american a month. Frickin ripoff, but no one else here offers broadband escept on a damn dish which sucks. On well, better than the 28.888 i used to get on dialup i spose.

1Mbit/s and about 15 users. On daytime I cannot download big files from ftp servers, because it would lower the connection down. So I have to make my downloads at night. 45-65kB/s then. But when I am downloading some smaller files on daytime then the speed is 30-45kB/s or something like that.

But I am happy with it :)

Sorry, I didn't know how to tell that word in English, student or under..., there were many words that meant student in the dictionary and I didn't know what was the best to use. Student is a general term. Undergraduate is a very specific term referring to people who are at university but haven't got a degree yet. Postgraduate is a student who is attending university and already has a degree, but they're studying further.

By and large, we use the word "student" in every day talk. We generally only use the other two words as a description of a student. i.e. "I'm an undergraduate student at the univeristy of nottingham". BUT just to confuse you, you can use them in the way you did. :p

Well, my current plan is 12G unlimited for $69AU. It's speed limited after 12G, which I never reach anyway.

And if it makes you feel better, I average around 3Mbps. :p A bad day is about 800kbps. :( I have received occasional speeds up to 20Mbps!

I think I can say I surf comfortably. :D

Actually Ug, no it's not. :p It's full V12 twin turbo bandwidth until I reach 12G of usage. Then it's limited to a preset speed. I don't think this classifies as capped; especially since I never reach 12G of downloads. :)

LOL..where did you hear that all Americans have broadband? No, I think the split is something like 80% dialup and 20% broadband, though I wouldn't want to be quoted on that. Broadband is increasing over here but the majority still use dial-up. With the exception of not being able to download large files in a reasonable time (like the free Linux distros!) I don't understand what the beef is with dial-up? I think it's fine, and can be had for under US $10 a month.

Like Genci I have a DSL connection. However it is capped to 128 kilobit/s. Our line is capable of 7.8Mbit/s and sometimes the speed capping breaks and we get the full pipe yay. This connection is shared amongst my self and two others so 128k does feel very slow at times. We also have a data cap of 15gb a month international, and since virtually no-one hosts much linux stuff here in NZ (due to bandwidth costs being so stupidly high) most of the interesting stuff is international.

Oh and when I am at uni with my laptop I get a 100mbit connection, but have to pay for all data which flows through it which doesn't origniate from the universities own servers.

Yes, Ug, I know about all that...it's just that I don't do most of it. Being able to update my system quickly would be a definite advantage, but for me (at least so far!) it doesn't justify the extra expense. There are introductory c ome-ons that give a lower rate for a few months, but I believe most broadband accounts in the US are around $40 a month, at least. Close to $500 a year! That's too steep for this cheap old fart.:D

well I don't play alot of online games or stream music however I have broadband and I have to say I can't imagine living without it. One plus that isn't easily reconized is the fact that you are always online. This doesn't sound like a huge advantage but it really is. There is no waiting to dialup and log in. no tied up phonelines. You can also download huge files off of xmule or the internet and just let it sit for a week until they are done, even if you have a slow connection. You also find alot of uses for broadband once you get it. I wouldn't do half the things I do without broadband. Anyways I really enjoy it but I suppose it isn't for everyone. However if you use the net alot and have considered getting a second phone line jsut for the internet I would definately say you should get broadband instead. It has literally changed the way i use my computer (for better or worse)

I have heard of hacking you cable modem to increase your bandwith...although there could be legal issues, it does prove that cable modems are capped which is not quite what was advertized when I got it...customer service will tell you that your speed varies due to the number of users in your "cell"

I don't intend on trying it...my connection is plenty fast enough...
and I figured that it could be detected based on what i have read...but I wish the cable companies would be more up front with the statistics they provide as to the speed of the connection...it seems to me that they adjust the "caps" based upon their needs instead of the customers needs...my service improved quite abit after I moved and was in a different "cell"

Anyway..we just increased speeds for all of our customers, and most that I have talked to are very pleased..I for one LOVE my cable modem service....

I know of a few people that tried the "hack" and didnt really see much of an improvement..

I wonder if anyone has tried that new Linksys router hack that was on /. recently,,,,? I'm curious if it adds neccesary functionality or just extra features....

i love ADSL i got a sweet 2mbit down/ 340kbit up ( 220 kb download and 35 kb upload).

Adsl is great i can update and install what ever i want when ever i want frome my pc. don't neet to work with dics's and things like that.
Althoug my speed i great i would be more interested in a 1mbit down and up. (or higher afcorse)
Becose with 35kb you can't do nothing :S can't ewen transfer files frome my home to my lap when i am somwher els in the world :S

You just get used to whatever you have very quickly. I was on dial up for years and couldn't see a need for anything else.

Now I often see speads over 5mbit and try another mirror if I'm not getting at least 2. Funny how your outlook changes.

I don't play games, download / stream music or video, I'm actually lucky to exceed 1 gig per month but I just like the convenience and couldn't even imagine using dsl now.

Sadly - 56k still :( - however, pleased with my external modem relative to previous software-modems - what a revelation at the time... :)

I'm on DSL at the moment (2048 kbit/s at home, fibre at work varies with traffic) but I did manage to download the RedHat 7.2 isos over dialup in my parents house a couple of years ago - just set it download, set the modem to disconnect when idle and then went on holidays with the family for 2 weeks! (seemed like a great idea at the time)

I suppose the irony of it is that I didn't ever get that version installed - had problems detecting hardware or something, can't quite remember.

Here in sunny Alberta, using ADSL service provided by the local phone company, I'm pulling 1287kbps/down and 509kbps/up according to PCPitstop and DSLReports. Relatively cheap too; $25CDN/mo. with no cap or limits.
Used to be a master of the 'surgical strike' when I had dial-up; because it hosed my telephone I got real good at finding what I needed and getting off. But last weekend I tried to use dial-up from a phone line in the garage while configuring a 'surprise' Win98 box for my daughter, and it was absolutely excruciating*... For those of you still on dial-up, 'I feel your pain'!

I am getting a consistant 350 kbps on my cable...but now they offer faster service...I am kinda pissed they now have come out with high speed cable (something they promised me in the beginning :(

Im on UK 512/256 broadband but thinking of changing ISP as I'm paying £27.99 for this package but with a diffrent ISP I can get 1024/256 for £31.99. But I'm so glad not to have to use dialup!

When I was a student back in Sweden we had to start with 2mbit at our dorm but that got upgraded to 10mbit. Man leeching isos back then was a bliss. Usually sat downloading with speeds around 800-1200kb/s.

Altho back at the uni it self we had 2x155mbit (talked to my mate that now works at the uni and he said they know have 655mbit, which is the standard link to all Swedish uni's. The bigger ones have gigabit....sigh i want that!) One day we decided to download RH can't remember what version but it was on 4 cd's so we started our download from the Sunet ftp server, went away to grab some lunch and when we got back about 20min later all cd's was downloaded when we checked the log I the download speeds where around 5000kb/s.

Now I don't want to be gready but I think 10mbit dedicated for myself is a speed I could be happy with :)

Ug, I'm not only on dialup, but far enough away from civilization that I'm lucky to cruise along at 33.6. :(

Oddly, there's a DSL company just down the road. The office I work at, 15 miles away, has DSL from that company. It's not available to me. Stupid phone company... :mad:

2mb/512kb adsl here. I just switced to it from a 2mb/200kb cable because the low upload bandwidth was a pain in the ass.

ever since getting my first dsl connection I've been a speed freak. I just get these horrible bandwidth cravings ".

I think I even read something about hacking your old standard 56k modems....

I wouldn't want to run afoul of the FCC (http://www.fcc.gov). IIRC 56k modems are capped in the U.S. at 53k, due to FCC regs. Could be wrong, though. ;)

*** For those without broadband in the UK ***

BT has announced that as of Monday 6th September, they are scrapping exchange distance limits meaning that anyone living more than 6km from an ADSL exchange will now be able to get a 512kbps broadband connection.

Previously, only those living 4km from an exchange were able to receive broadband services.

This lift means that approximately 99.8% of telephone lines in the UK should now be able to receive 512kbps broadband - good news for all those living in more remote areas.

Damn my dsl sucks its like 256 down and 768 up which translates to something like 180kb down and 30 up. (its more like 25) Strangely enough my download speed seems to go through the roof when I am in fedora I find it strange that it lists my downloads at 300+kb (its never stable its always dropping.) when downloading from sourceforge...anyone have any idea why?
