View Full Version : Using a "media drive"

Hello. I have been thinking about a neat solution to sharing media files (music, pictures and movies) between users on my computer.

When FC4 comes out I'll hopefully buy a new harddrive and installed FC4 on it. I want to use the old HD to films, music and so on. Perhaps it can be mounted to /media/ or something?

Can I do this during the installation of fedora? I'll need to format the old and new drives and tell fedora where I want the old HD to be mounted.

Also, I'll need to give all "normal" users read/write rights to the entire old HD. Anyone who knows how to do this?

Btw; will there be any performance gain or loss with this solution?

You can choose to set a partition on it during the installation, for instance you /home directory.
If you want it mounted to /media you need to do it after the installation (at least I don't know a way to do it while installing).
If have just bought a new harddisk too and when I install FC4, I put everything on the old 20GB and put /home on the new one, so that during the next install my data on /home stays where it is.

Beware that /media is a reserved root directory for the mounting of removable media. http://www.tldp.org/LDP/Linux-Filesystem-Hierarchy/html/

I would advise using a different name or location to avoid conflict with the standards.

Ok, I was afraid of that. Thanks for pointing that out. I suppose one can't/shouln'd create new folders in / ?!
So, should I create a media folder under /home/ or where? I'd preffer if it's not too deep within the file structure, so it's easy to use for my girlfriend (and me!)
