loading up RH9 and attempting to load some other packages (nessus and
lynx)

I have found and insatlled the necessary rpm's but when I run them from
terminal window they wont run. I am running as root (i know).

Is there some path issue or something I am missing?

Thanks

huh?

*Exactly* what do you do to try to get them to run?

"loading"? Do you mean "install"?

How did you "found and insatlled the necessary rpm's"? from the
command-line?

Don't run as root. Don't run as root. Don't run as root. Repeat after me.

OK,

Installed RH 9

Went to install Nessus

Downloaded nessus-installer.sh

Open terminal window and typed sh nessus-installer.sh

Response was I needed sharutil-xx.rpm

Went to RH 9 cd 3 and grabbed sharutil-xx.rpm (yes, the XX had the file
name, I just don't remember it as I type this)

In terminal typed rpm -ivh sharutil-xx.rpm

Got the verbose on the screen

Re-ran sh nessus-installer.sh and go the same error (needed sharutil-
xx.rpm…looking for uunencode)

So I figured I would install over the net (not running as root though),
but I didn't have lynx on the system

Went to RH 5 cd got lynx rpm , same steps as above and when I type lynx
at the terminal prompt, I get bad command (or whatever)

Does that help?

Thanks

It's big difference on upper and lower case, so installing sharutil from the
RPM may not upfill the dependency of the nessus-installer it may look for a
specific version, so installing another version may break the "dependnecy").

There are freshrpm RPMs of nessus, those are made for RedHat
http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=nessus&submit=Search+...&system=&arch=

or go to their official page at freshrpms.net

When you install RPMs from the console/xterm, I suggest you use the -Uvh
instead of -ivh (only case that you should use -ivh is when you install a
kernel, as then you want still keep your old version). Don't forget, you still
need to 'su' to use rpm, unpriviliged users can't use it (normally when it
coems to installing).

RH5 is quite old, so I don't recommend you to use those binaries, better to
use the lynx that comes with RH9, there are links, which IMHO is better than
lynx, as it does handle frames quite well too (still text based).
