Sort of off topic, but yet linux question.

- I already had WinXP on a PC (kids use it
for games).
- I installed the XOSL boot manager from
www.xosl.org on it's own partition. I'd assume
any boot manager will pertain to this question.
- I installed RH9 Linux on it's partition.

All work well, xosl provides a menu to boot. If
I choose Linux, grub boot manager comes up,
and I choose Linux, and Linux boots. However,
I don't need grup anymore, since I already have
xosl. How can I bypass grub and make Linux boot
when I choose it from the 3rd party boot manager?

IIRC, linux requires that either Grub or Lilo to be installed either to the
/boot partition or to the / (root) partition order to boot the OS. XOSL
will point to the partition in which the linux loader is installed.

I, too, am using XOSL for my boot manager and when selecting RH9 or Suse
8.2, Grub still is needed to boot either linux OS much the same as the
ntloader is needed to boot Win XP or Win 2K.

Agree. However NT loader doesn't ask which OS to load, it goes ahead and
loads
WinXXX. Can I do the same with grub?

Hello Zilla,
I am sure that you can set up Grub to boot which ever OS you want as default
boot OS and after a timeout of say 10 sec grub will boot the default OS
that you have chosen.

I currently am using Win 98, Win2K, RH9, and SuSe 8.2 on two HD's and using
XOSL to boot them. I have chosen Win2K as my default OS and XOSL will boot
into it after a timeout of 15 sec if there is no intervention on my part.

If I choose one of the other OS's in XOSL, say RH9, XOSL will point to the
/boot partition that RH9 is installed on and Grub will be launched and I am
given a chose of OS's including both Win partitions or both Linux
partitions to boot. My current setup is that Grub will automatically boot
RH9 in 10 sec if there is no intervention on my part.

BTW, I don't know about Win XP, as I don't ever plan on using it in its
current form due to my dislike of the activation policy and that it is not,
IMHO, as good as Win2K. But that is for another NG.
However, the ntloader in Win2K can be configured to multiboot OS's as I
currently am using it to boot both Win98 and Win2K and one can select the
default OS to boot.

Hope this helps,
Regards,
