View Full Version : New Audigy Card

I just upgraded my REALLY old sound card to a SoundBlaster Audigy MP3. I
checked Red Hat's compatibility list and I thought it would work with Red
Hat 9. However, it doesn't. I've been doing some searching but I cannot
figure out how to get it going. Everything says I need to turn sound on and
recompile my kernel. I cannot find where to do this and Red Hat "does not
support re-compiling a kernel". Can someone please give or point me towards
some very simple instructions. I am still a huge Linux novice. Also,
everything says the kernel should be in /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-20.x and I do
not see it there.

Hi, Robert:
Did you have your old sound card configured under RH9? Did Kudzu prompt
you at bootup to configure your new hardware? I wonder if you should
run kudzu as root and remove the old hardware from the list, then reboot
and see if kudzu recognizes the new card.
Just a thought - take it with a grain of salt.

I had an Aureal card before and there was no hope of it working. That is
part of the reason I bought the SB Audigy. Kudzu did find it but all it did
was install support for the 1394 port. I will try to run it again. Do you
know how to recompile the kernel in RH 9?

I haven't tried recompiling under Red Hat 9, but I did recompile one
time under RH7.2 by following the Kernel HOWTO:
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO/
I'm not convinced that you need to recompile your kernel, though. If
the driver for your card can be loaded as as shared module, I don't
believe there should be a need. Have you tried the Alsa drivers? How
about "insmod" to load your module into memory?
Again, I'm not sure, but hopefully that gives you some place to start.

John,
How do you use insmod?
