The kernel in RH72 (2.2.x I think) uses the OSS sound drivers. Check the compatibility list at the OSS homepage: http://www.opensound.com/linux.html

As for Win98 - just about every major vendor provides Win98 drivers.

No, it should be 2.4. At least RH 7.3 was.

Unfortunately the old Red Hat HCL is no longer around.

Ah yes, after a little searching, you're right. It was kernel-2.4.18. The 2.4 series was introduced in RH7.0.90 as illustrated at: http://fedora.redhat.com/about/history/ That page chronicles the entire history of Redhat / Fedora - a good read.
