Hi - a week or two back I reinstalled Red Hat 9, as all printer
functionality had died (it was a very strange problem, but perhaps a drastic
solution). Anyway I'd gotten so fed up of Red Hat not having the packages it
needed for things, I told it to install everything. This has been working
fine.
Last night I did an up2date -u - and this caused some problems.
Understandably it took a LONG time, but the glibc update sat for ages and
ages and ages doing nothing. The process in question was 'glibc_post_upgr',
a sub process of service, a sub process of up2date. Eventually I killed it,
and up2date went on in its merry way. I knew that to have a damaged glibc
would be bad, so I quickly reinstalled the rpm that comes with RH9 (not
ideal, but I thought it might help). up2date had errors (below) with other
rpms after this:

This morning I installed the rpm of the updated glibc manually. This
worked - but the results of installing the ones that had problems last night
are the same (they are the results shown above). I'm afraid to reboot in
case a segmentation error kicks in and prevents me from getting back in. The
full text from last night is at the bottom of this message.
For some (unrelated) reason, I also continually get this in
/var/log/messages:
modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module ppp0
Is there a RH9 hard disk checking facility?
If anyone has any idea why this is happening and any idea how to fix it, it
would be very much appreciated.
