so i'm poking around in modprobe and i see this ...

alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
options snd-card-0 index=0
install snd-intel8x0 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-intel8x0 && /usr/sbin/alsactl restore >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
remove snd-intel8x0 { /usr/sbin/alsactl store >/dev/null 2>&1 || : ; }; /sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-intel8x0

i had previously tried to use alsaconf (1.0.8) to try and fix my sound problems so further down is this ...

# --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
# --- ALSACONF verion 1.0.8 ---
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0
# --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---

now ... in that first part am i reading this correctly ... its installing snd-intel8x0 and the next line removes it?? is there a particular reason why my system would do this?

It will still work like that. I've done the same thing and it makes no difference. The top lines are done by kudzu to save your settings on exit I personally would stick to teh top ones and take out the ones done by alsaconf.
