View Full Version : Adobe reader gives "ppklite" error

I've installed 7.0 as per Thomas Chung's very easy to follow instructions.
Reader works very well, except on start-up I get the following error message:
There was an error while loading the plug-in 'PPKLite.api' The plug-in failed to initialise
Has anyone else had this error and what exactly is the problem?
Any information, redirection or advice is most appreciated.

Hello,
Try rebuilding RPM with the updated spec for AdobeReader I just posted.
http://fedoranews.org/tchung/AdobeReader/7.0/AdobeReader.spec
Make sure to reload browser so you don't get cached copy.
The changelog should say:
* Wed Apr 20 2005 Thomas Chung <tchung@fedoranews.org> 7.0-2
- Rebuild 7.0 with TAR released on 2005-04-12
- No need to disable build root strip policy
- Use symlink instead of copying plugin

Thanks Thomas,
Sorry for being a bit concrete, but are you saying I should reinstall Ffox (my browser)?
Should I remove remove the Adobe RPM and Ffox, or reinstall both over the top of the existing installations?
Thanks.

Just AdobeReader. As I mentioned in my previous post, I posted an updated spec file with release 7.0-2. Make sure to download the fresh copy of TAR ball from Adobe site as well.
Just to be safe, remove old AdobeReader RPM before installing new RPM.

Hmmmm...
I did just that. Uninstalled. Rebuilt the RPM with the 7.0-2 and ... same problem. Weird. It works perfectly well otherwise - in fact I'm very impressed. This is odd!

You need to install openldap to sort out the PPKLite.api plugin problem.

Howdy,
I installed openldap but got no resolution. Here's a quick-and-dirty fix that I used:
Rename /usr/lib/AdobeReader/Reader/intellinux/plug_ins/PPKLite.api
to
/usr/lib/AdobeReader/Reader/intellinux/plug_ins/_PPKLite.api_
(or anything else that will get it out of the way).
Voila. No startup error. I heard somewhere that Adobe was "working on it." Hm. At any rate, it's a nice program.
To Thomas Chung, thanks for your work in making a good installation of it accessible to Newbs like myself.

In the release notes it says that installing openldap should solve the problem, but your solution also works fine.

Hi phillywize,
Genius!
Worked immediately. Thanks to you and to Thomas (and Adobe for finally upgrading for Linux users).
Thanks ball boys and ball girls :)

Thomas: thanks for all YOUR help...I'm a fan.
4ebees: I've been sponging fixes and linux advice off of these forums (and people like Thomas) for so long, that it's nice to finally be able to provide a fix...even a modest one like this!
