Read here -> http://www.coyotegulch.com/reviews/gcc4/index.htmlBit disapointing, but I think good things will happen in the future. (I do a bit longer on a kernel compilation :( )

...and it's "OK", but I'm surprised with the long list of packages that are no longer on even the DVD ISO. Significant examples include abiword, aumix, bzflag, xmms, pdksh (replaced by ksh), nedit, exim, gnuchess/xboard, Maelstrom, ncftp, pan, tuxracer and tora. Yes, I know you can probably get them from Fedora Extras, but considering the DVD ISO was "only" 2.7GB, it seems a bit strange to drop so many well-known packages.

BTW, is it just me or are there now *no* 3D games at all with Fedora Core 4's install media?! We seem to be going backwards in the games department w.r.t. what ships with FC nowadays...

Maybe because you're using MD5SUM instead of SHA1SUM?
The hashes are for SHA1SUM and no more for MD5SUM, AFAIK...

GCC4 has actually shown signs of regression in performance.
I have done my own tests and found personally that GCC3.4 is slightly quicker.

What exactly is the purpose of Xen?

A school of Mahayana Buddhism that asserts that enlightenment can be attained through the Linux kernel, open source software, and finally getting that nVidia card to load, rather than through faith and devotion.

OMG I can't believe i missed that. I just learned something new today - I don't read carefully enough and there's a sha1sum. Thank you. :)

No, that along with other factors would be classified as supreme enlightenment. Kinda like when Neo came back to life at the end of The Matrix.

I currently run FC4T3 with Nviida 3D accelerator using livna package (http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/3/i386/SRPMS.stable/nvidia-glx-1.0.7174-0.lvn.1.3.src.rpm). It is very easy to rebuild and you don't need to touch /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
The snapshot version of yumex for FC4 (http://linux.rasmil.dk/cms/modules/news/article.php?storyid=8) runs smoothly and I have not encountered a single crash.
I have not enabled early login. Using bootchart, it took about a minute to boot. Personnaly not a big deal for me.
Overall performance, this test release is smooth and crisp.

Total noob here. If I install FC4T3 would I get around this (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=138419) bug? I also see that the disk is not bootable. How would I go about doing a clean install and dual boot with WinXP?

Just wait till the stable release in a few weeks. I'll am probably going to switch back when it becomes stable again.

Actually I need to play around with it for work. I can always use Red Hat 9. But I would rather install something that new.

Are the test disks bootable. If they are than I probably didn't download the bootable version.

Hello,

at the moment I am running FC2.
I got several repositories in my yum.conf.

Can I update to FC4 in spite of the additional repositories?
Will the repositories also support FC4?

Do you have any experiences with this case?

Regards
Cornelius

First, you need to upgrade yum because the latest version uses metadata(i.e. repositories are located in separate file inside /etc/yum.repos.d/
Second, disable freshrpms, kde-redhat, dag and fedora-us(which became extras) with this line "enable=0" on each repository. Currently, the only third party repository that support the current test release is Livna.
Remove the possible conflicting packages. This is a must because of problem.
Then, do this command "yum upgrade". That will retain some old packages.

FC4 is getting smarter:
- I just updated kernel to 2.6.11-1.1303. After the reboot, FC4 will automatically set to the default xorg.conf (i.e. setting "nvidia" to "nv") instead of going to shell mode. I rebuilt the nvidia kernel module for this version. Personnaly, I wish Nvidia will use Livna method.

what's the position on including mono, and notably beagle (which probably presumes inotify, though I think there is now user-space notification) in fedora? I'm disappointed to see it didn't make it.
