I'm currently running RedHat 7.3, and I'm thinking about downloading version
9. My question is will that hurt anything? Such as Apache (1.3.27),
sendmail, etc. I'm worried that some inter dependencies (like lib versions
changing, it glibc stuff.)
Thanks for any info. I just want to know if the upgrade if worth the hassle,
and what the repercussions, if any, are.
Thanks.

RedHat 9 has Apache 2 and you will lose Mp3 applications.
Wait a couple of months and download RedHat 10.

Don't wait. Go to Guru Labs (or a number of places) and download RPMs for RH9 that
support MP3. I'm really surprised that people still don't know how to do this for
themselves since it's been almost a year since Red Hat 8 dropped MP3 from xmms.
It's like saying "XP sucks because it doesn't come with Adobe Premiere". Sheesh...

True, although I prefer:
apt-get install xmms
:-)

License fees? What a crock of manure.

Sadly, true.

See what happens when people get hooked on rpms exclusively? If you are
going to be a *nix user learn to compile real src's fer cryin' out load! :-)

Kde 3 is great imho.

For the record, I use RH 7.3 myself, with good 'ol Apache 1.3.27, Perl
5.6.1, and it gets the job done. I currently have no need to do any serious
upgrades. There are always some upgrades that can be done. Like a little
while ago I up'ed glibc* from 2.2.5-34 to 2.2.5-43, which has some mild
fixes here and there.
I would install glibc-2.3.2-4.80 but it would require 1000 and 1 other
upgrades as well. Would be nice if there was an easier way...
