I don't think you can do that. RH kernels and kernel.org kernels might
be different. So why not directly get the source of 2.4.21* kernel?

RH Rawhide already has 2.4.22, compiled and ready to go. If you don't
like the binary, the source is also provided. I haven't tried it myself
yet.

Then again, the next candidate beta is scheduled for public release this
Thursday from the Fedora project. It may have a few more bug-fix
patches than the current Rawhide kernel, if you can wait a few more days.

I don't have the experience to build a kernel and i don't know how a
selfmade kernel works in a existing RH9 ambiance.
Are there any problems expected?

thx
Robert

Creating your own kernel is not hard, it does take a small bit of time if
you want it customized to your system(s). The current stable version is
kernel-2.4.22 from kernel.org and runs just fine in RHL9 ambiance. All you
really need to do is follow the directions available here;

http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/custom-guide/s1-custom-kernel-modularized.html

There is a minor change to the guide, the working directory location is;
/usr/src/linux instead of /usr/src/linux-2.4

You can, for example, click on the 'Load Configuration from File' button
(make xconfig) and select the current system configuration by typing in
'/boot/config-2.4.20-20.9' in the pop-up window. This will configure the
new kernel for your working system. The already installed kernel(s) will
not be removed. Your boot loader menu will be updated to reflect the new
kernel boot choice and you will have to select it manually until you
modify your boot loader's conf file (/boot/grub.conf for example).

More help is available here;

http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO/index.html

One last word of advice, never try to patch any kernel-source from Red Hat
with patches meant for the standard kernels from kernel.org. Red Hat
patches(modifies/customizes) the kernels they supply themselves.
