During the initial setup during installation, you come across the section titled:

Sound Card

A sound card has been detected on your computer.

Vendor: ALi
Model: Corporation M5451 PCI AC-Link Controller Audio Device
Module: snd-ali5451

The button to Play test sound is there.

Push it and you hear nothing. If you answer you did not hear anything, it says:

 Automatic detection of the sound card did not work. Audio will not be available on the system. Please click OK to continue.

I have seen comments here and there where it had been said that sound is muted by default. Seems a little curious, considering the step during the setup, eh?

Regardless, I click YES - I heard sound - wonderful, beautiful sound! So that it will continue. I hit Next a few times to get to the logon screen. I logon using Gnome.

First thing I do to check is go to Applications -> Sound & Video -> Volume Control.

I receive the following message:

 Sorry, no mixer elements and/or devices found.

I go to the Hardware Browser and it lists the following:

Selected Device: ALi Corporation M5451 PCI AC-Link Controller Audio Device
Manufacturer: Unknown
Driver: snd-ali5451

I close out of that and go back to the Soundcard Detection. It gives me the same info above as received during the setup process.

Still no sound . . . wait, somebody had mentioned the alsamixer.

root@dgifedora ~# alsamixer

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device

Okay, something is up here . . .

I had also seen mention of /dev/dsp.

In looking in /dev, there is no dsp.

Sorry also about the posts in this thread, I am doing this on two different computers while I run different things on the notebook.

I forgot that I had reinstalled FC3 again. (I have been back and forth between FC3, FC2, and RH7.2/7.3) . . .

Running 2.6.9-1.667 . . . going to go through the upgrades again and run lsmod again. Will take a look for dsp again after that as well. Will run alsamixer again, etc.

Hrmmm, I decided to install FC3 on another box instead of doing the upgrade from FC2.

During the initial setup during installation, you come across the section titled:

Sound Card

A sound card has been detected on your computer.

Vendor: ESS
Model: Technology ES1969 Solo-1 Audiodrive
Module: snd-es1938

The button to Play test sound is there.

Well, when you press it with this computer - the sound plays.

Thus, it should play on the notebook as well.

This tells me something else is going on with my sound issue, eh?

Btw, still waiting on the updates on the notebook to go through.

Updated, and the same issue.

Any suggestions?
