My SB Live! sound card quit working with .1231 and .1233 kernels from rawhide, but my on board Realtec (sp?) works fine. The .1177 kernel that came with FC4t1 install works fine as well. Something to do with Also maybe, or the module (emu10k1) not loading correctly or or something?

I have read of problems with sound occurring after upgrade of kernel.
Have a look at your alsa settings. They can easily be adjusted by right clicking on the sound icon on the taskbar and adjusting the volume settings. In my case it needed muting of the capture. No rhyme or reason to it, but worked. May be different for you, but give it a go.

rpm -qa | grep alsa

alsa-utils-1.0.8-4
alsa-lib-1.0.8-4.devel

setting or unsetting the digital output doesn't fix it. I did see that when right clicking on the sound icon on my panel, that when getting to the menu and trying to adjust setting, that I am not able to unmute (get the x's out of them) the sound and what not.

But not sure what this problem is, cause if I boot to a lower kernel, the sound works, just not with the latest ones.

Try going to ATrpms grab the alsa-driver 1.0.8 and the alsa-kmdl 1.0.8 YOUR_KERNEL_VERSION
save them to a folder

in the terminal

cd /home/you/folder

rpm -Uvh *.rpm (use this command if they are the only 2 rpms in the folder if not, then copy and paste them into the same line to be instaled. they need to be installed at the same time

I've wondered for a while what the purpose of the alsa driver and kernel module from ATrpms was, since alsa seems to be "included" with the base Fedora Core installation. Could you possibly explain the differences or the advantages of the ATrpms packages?

The later version 1.0.8 includes drivers for more of the later availible sound cards
I believe it will be standard in FC4

Try again:
On your taskbar at the top of the desktop is the sound icon (looks like a speaker).
Right click it and first make sure Mute is not ticked.
Then select Open Volume control.
Make sure that Master,Master Mono, Headphone and PCM are not muted.
Make sure that Capture is muted.
(Most likely you have to change Headphone and capture)

Good luck, Antonia
