View Full Version : Can't get yum or up2date to update

When i run yum update it downloads all of the headers but during the transaction check it fails due to a few dependencies such as openoffice.org-core and libmusicbrainz.so files
up2date will only update the kernel files, it won't even allow me to download all of the updates. you can check the files for update but you cannot proceed forward. It is like the files have don't have any size to them.
I understand this is a test release but test releases are good for learning things.

maybe you have to upgrade your yum.conf with new sources, in order to solve the dependencies

I will give that a try

obviously I haven't learned enough to update sources. Sorry to ask, but how to I update my yum sources.

Not sure of the location on FC4 maybe the same as fc3
look in /etc/yum.repos.d/
then as root gedit name.repo

I guess my real question is how do I edit the yum.repos.d files
I see that the files have addresses but I am not sure of a good source address and do I have to change any of the other info in the files.

is there a updates.repo
copy and paste that file to a message
as root open it by issuing this command
gedit /etc/yum.repos.d/updates.repo

This is a test release and the "update's" is the development area. This is very much subject to renew packages with possible broken dependencies. I updated yesterday to be almost update and today I updated 34 packages for a total of 34 Mb
but if you have problems with dependencies exclude the packages from the update like this
yum --exclude=<package-name> --exclude=flac update

I use yum, so I can't diagnose based on your problem description, but when I suspect a repository has changed its URL, I look in the pertinent file in repos.d and test the address. For example, in yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.d:
baseurl=http://radar0/fedora/updates/$releasever/$basearch
$releasever = 3 (using core 3) and $basearch = i386 (for me), so I test
http://radar0/fedora/updates/3/i386 with my browser.
If the address doesn't work, I either messed it up or I can figure out the right address and edit fedora-updates.d as fedorjim suggests. Note that you DO NOT want to copy my updates repo line above.

another problem
it acts like it is going to update when I type in yum update
but exits with this error

It still will not let me update because of these dependencies. Shouldn't it just download the missing dependencies?
sorry, I am just trying to learn a little!

Are you using FC4 test1?
Have you changed any references related to FC3 in this post?
It might be possible that the server is not uptodate!
you can update
yum --exclude=kdemultimedia --exclude=jpilot --exclude=k3b (and so on) update
references to FC3 are not applicable if this is a tFC4 test release!

yeah, I am sorry this is FC4 test 1

So am I but
try
yum update k3b kdemultimedia
and see if this reduces the dependecies list
I have search the test and development list but haven't found anything yet
3eleven
30th March 2005, 08:15 PM
I have started downloading the individual dependecies and installing them and that has made the list smaller
I am updating k3b kdemultimedia right now

in order to get all of them to install I just install flac and libexif using rpm -Uvh --nodeps <packagename> after that it still updated flac, updated everything including libmusicbrainz except cracklibs and python-devel. . . I get an even more odd error on shadow-utils which takes place after it downloads the file and runs the transaction check.
Transaction Check Error: file /usr/bin/newgrp from install of shadow-utils-4.0.7-4 conflicts with file from package util-linux-2.12p-3
File /usr/share/man/man1/newgrp.1.gz from install of shadow-utils-4.0.7-4 conflicts with file from package util-linux-2.12p-3
so pythong devel, cracklibs, and shadow-utils are still outstanding.

I have solved all my dependencies but one and this one is weird
Processing Conflict: python-devel conflicts python < 2.4-6
I update python to 2.4-6 but when the python-devel tries to update it gives me the previous error
Is there a command that will allow python-devel to see that python is in fact updated?

3Eleven:
I have never tried to do what you are trying at this moment by using yum update.
My process is:
1) yum check-update
2) yum update package package package pack
3) repeat steps 1 and 2
I have noticed that there are times when I have depencdencies missing as well, but there is still updates that you can get by selecting which packages to update. Eventually the dependencies errors will get resolved and everything will be good again.

Just an fyi, I wouldn't do the nodeps when you run rawhide. Every other day you will see dep errors, you just have to wait it out until the devel's make a patch and the build system rebuilds nightly. You will see this all the time, thats why its called the Dev Tree!
Oh, welcome to rawhide ;)
another thing that is good to either be on or visit is the test mailling list
