New Dual boot Fedora 3 and WinXP, can't view windows files

I just did a fresh install of fedora core 3. I am pretty new to linux and so I'm a bit lost.

I have my computer setup as a dual-boot with windows xp on a 80 gig partition and fedora core 3 on a 40 gig partition.

When I get into fedora I tried navigating to /dev/hda1 so I could view my windows files... but I get an error message saying:
"Couldn't display "/dev/hda1"."
"Nautilus has no installed viewer capable of displaying the file."

I am guessing I need to mount my windows partition at boot, but I would appreciate some direction here.

Also- I would very much like to be able to play all my itunes music files in linux. Is there a good music program for linux that will play all my mp3 files?

Your /dev.hda is a ntfs partition? YOu won't be able to write to that patition onld read from it. If your looking to do some file sharing, you should createa a small 5 GB Fat32 partition. Then we can help you to read/write to that partition. There is NTFS support to read from that drive, BUT you'll have to do some messing around and getthe correct rpm for your kernel. Then everytime you update the kernel, you'll need to get a new rpm for your latest kernel. Again it will be up to what way you want to go.

so.. what's the easiest way of viewing/reading/read-only that ntfs partition drive?

Actually, I am just trying to read what's on my windows partition, and I'm getting that error message. I am not really too interested in writing since I can use my cd burner if I REALLY want to do that.

So, any ideas on how to be able to read what's on the windows partition ? (yes, it is an NTFS partition)

Where you need to go is the Linux NTFS Project (http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/).

Specifically, the Fedora Core 3 (http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/rpm/fedora3.html) page.

As you will see the web page is no longer maintained, but they do still keep adding RPMS for the newer kernels as they come out.

As long as you read the intructions (http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/rpm/instructions.html) you should be fine.

Unfortunately, fedorajim is correct about having to install a new NTFS RPM accordingly to match your kernel if you upgrade.

NTFS support is included in the kernel, but is disabled.
So if you really felt like it you could re-configure your kernel.

But in my experience it is actually easier and faster to use the RPMS.

It is not an NTFS partition. Sorry for the lack of clarity, but the only reason I know of to use ntfs would be if it were a windows install. It is ext3
