Hi everyone,
I was just doing some research on Mp3 players when I realized I wouldn't be able to use them seeing as Fedora Core is not supported by the iPod or Creative Nomad's software. Is there any way to get a portable MP3 player, like the iPod, running in Linux? I really don't want to have to boot up my XP just to download some songs to my MP3. If there really is no way, I think this should be a priority for Fedora developers. It would make the Fedora experience much better for users....
Thanks,

I had an ipod mini.
I installed fedora, ran yum -y update, rebooted into new kernel.
Then i hooked my ipod up and it mounted automatically.
I changed gtkpod to use the directory that fedora mounts it at and everything worked fine.
(GTKPod = software used to sync your music :P )

Hi,
Thanks! The only thing that I don't like about the iPods are that you have to send in the battery for 200$ every year and 1/2. Is there any other known ones? I can always get an iPod but I really don't like the 200$ every 2 years....

Hey,
I posted a thread in Creative forums, but I've been having big problems w/ Creative MuVo TX FM. 512 MB, broke after 2 months, got it replaced, just broke again after 3 weeks. So that's twice in 3 months. Not good. I know someone who's had another model MuVo (n200, now renamed to Micro) for 3 years. I' just wanted to know peopel's experience with portable MP3 players, apart from the iPod. I personally don't want an iPod, so I'd prefer to go with Creative, Dell, iRiver or something similar...
BTW, both times they broke, it was only MP3 playback problems. Flashcard memory, Radio, and microphone still worked fine. Tells you something.
EDIT: This playback can be solved by re-flashing the firmware in... I think it's because I left the battery out for too long.
Thanks!

I have the Rio something ( I cant remember the name . . . it's the small grey and black sports one ) and it shows up as /dev/sda1 and I just mount it in a folder. Then just delete or copy mp3's over and it works fine.
I'm on FC4 btw.

Yes you can get almost any mp3player currently out to work with Linux, checkout my how to here on the boards. Its for an Ipod 3g specifically but the same steps apply to get it mounted. Do not get any Iriver products they suck plain and simple. If you want a good mp3player I would suggest taking a look at Iaudio, I plan on getting the 60gb version of the x5 when that gets released in the states. [I have a crapriver H340 and can't downgrade to a 20 or 30gb x5 even if it is a far superior product.]

You shouldn't encounter any problems with flash-based players. Set the Removable Media settings to automount and auto-browse.

You should check some forums regarding the IPod battery or google it, you dont need to replace the battery every year for 200$
It´s depending on usage, specially the charging cycle.
Another thing is that I´d like to think that somebody going with fedora is pretty handy and hence can replace the battery for about 25$
BTW I dont work for Apple, I just have an IPod :)

lol... Thanks for all the posts, it gives me a better idea... But, know for a new perspective - in terms of quality... I got my flashdrive MP3 to work, but both ones I got (Creative MuVo TX FM) crashed on my within 2 months... I was wondering for good quality MP3 players....

I possessed a "IRiver" and a "I-Audio" player. No problems with both. And both are supporting ogg.....

Hey,
just checked out ipod battery. As I thought, after 1 year and a half, it's 129.00$ CAD to sed it in 2 apple, plus I lose all data. I much prefer having Creative flashdrive that I can use a single AAA rechargable, and if that battery dies it costs maybe 2$ to replace, not 129$. Not to mention I don't lose all my songs + data on it.
Thanks!
