I'm fairly new to Linux, and I have a x86 pc with a US Robotics 56k modem that SuSe and Xandros seem to recognize, but Fedora doesn't autodetect it. I was able to add it after the installation, and it works most of the time, but it seems like my connection speed is only about 20% of what I get running the same modem under XP pro.

Also, I'm trying to learn the command line as much as possible. Is there a way to activate my modem from the command line? I think it is either PPP0 or tty4, but I haven't figured out how activate it from anything other than the GUI.

You can use kppp from the command line. I've found setting the modem speed (in the kppp setup) to something realistic (say 48K) makes it work faster than having it set to something too high, like 150K.

Well you might want to search the registry of your XP installation for the init strings it uses.
Then you install minicom get your modem manual and use minicom to store the profile that you found in the registry before. Or you peek at the SuSE settings.
Redmonds alternate operation system and Linux won't do that automagically.

Optimizing the strings within the modem profile will also make the setup of things like getty-fax oer voice box easier.
