FC 4 Test 1 Install

Hello Forum,
I am currently running FC3. And have had FC1 and FC2 on the my machine.

So, when FC4 Test 1 came out, I downloaded it and installed it.
Install went all the way to the end. However, when I hit the reboot button the system rebooted. When it got to "firstboot". it failed and so I did not get to the add user section or display configuration, etc. I was taken directly to the login screen where I could only log in as root....however, after logging in, the system hung there.....no gui....no terminal....no nothing.

I tried reinstalling several times with different configurations....always the same.....firstboot fails.

Any ideas as to how to get this to work???

If you just do yum update it will update a fair amount of updates my first update was > 200 Mb

I have never used/heard of it.
Please tell me about it...or point me to a place that will.

Aw, come on. Fedora 3 isn't that unstable. I use it everyday to do work and it runs fine for the most part. I usually have RealPlayer10 streaming internet music, Jpilot for synching my palm, gimp for editing images, Nautilus running for file mangement, K3B burning CD's, Firefox browsing the web, Thunderbird collecting email. I never turn off the system and it hasn't crashed on me yet - though Firefox crashes at night sometimes due to Mozilla bugs.

Now, Fedora 4 is brand spankin' new. I would like to play around with it but I have work to do! I will wait until all the guinea pigs are done testing it and the first updates are released for it. This is a conservative approach but it has worked for me all the way from FC1.

You should know yum like a good friend. Open a shell, login as su and type yum check-update, or yum update, or yum install realplayer* or yum remove kde. Read about how to configure yum at fedorafaq.org link.

Good Grief, Charlie Brown! I expected that there would be glitches and problems with a test release. But, this is scarey! I knew this wasn't good when the install hung for over a half hour on "installing boot..." Now, I can get it to slowwwwwwly boot to a login screen, and there it stops. I've tried the 'yum update gdm' as suggested above, but it times out waiting for the repository url.....with a 1.5g dsl??
Is there hope? Is it possible I might get past this black screen-white letters login to a shell?
Maybe we should wait for test2?

i had the same problem with FC4 test1 install went ok on first boot i login as root and then screen goes black nothing happens after that

Actually, I gave up on test1, and I'm running fc4t2. I first did a net install, but, since I didn't boot from the cd1....booted from a boot file I put in /boot/fc4install.... I was limited to a text-mode install. That also limited me to just the base packages, with either no access or obscure access to 'extras.' So, I broke down and burned the install cd's and re-installed via cd's. FC4t2 is now running on a second hd and seems to be completely functional. I've been too busy to spend a whole lot of time with it the past few days, just doing daily yum updates.
