Does it help you to know that Fedora Core is #1 on my list?

Good!! I really don't like to use a system which is used by everyone. Second to an important brazilian writer (Nelson Rodrigues), the unanimity is stupid.

You mean that we are STILL out in front of all the other distro's as far as having new features and kernels???
GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wouldn't have it any other way....

So ubuntu is growing, I think that's nice. Ubuntu is a great distro, and I hope they do well. I don't think this is really a decrease in Fedora downloads as much as it's a great increase in ubuntu downloads. So it's a win-win really.

I've never looked at distro watch before today, I agree with the comments about Ubuntu been a great OS and its good to see them climbing.
The biggest surprise for me was that Mandrake Linux tops the list?
Does anyone know why?
My sister has Mandrake as a 3rd OS, but she never boot's into it.
The only thing I really like about Mandrake is the tron game ;)

Mandrake is on 9-10 CDs and is shipped with everything there is incuding drivers for a lot of software and also a lot of commercial software. And it has a 30 day support included in the package, if you buy it.
And important for Europe: It is not from the USA, but France. I know a lot of people here in Germany (UK might be others) that do not like RedHat as an American Corporation and prefer Mandrake instead.
And Mandrake is very popular among european and especially French firms and governemental organizations.

The DistroWatch rankings are based on clicks on the corresponsing links, nothing else. It only measures what is popular on DistroWatch itself, in terms of what DistroWatch users are clicking on.
With Ubuntu rising, it's a reflection of how much buzz, popularity, and momentu Ubuntu is getting. It's also a reflection of Mark Shuttleworths funding millions into Ubuntu marketing, in terms of free CDs with free shipping. That will most definetly increase popularity.
And Ubuntu deseves the attention, quite frankly. It's a damn fine distro (It's amoung the 4 distros I use, including FC).
Also, if you change the search on DistroWatch to be based on the last 3 months, or the last month (instead of the default last 6 months), Ubuntu is number one.

Ubuntu is a great distro, and I hope they do well
I was just checking out Ubuntu on their site and it is essentially Debian with the latest packages for Gnome, Mozilla, X.org, etc. It actually is pretty nice looking. Their incorporation of Synaptic is very nice and their update application looked very well designed. I think the Fedora developers could learn some stuff by looking at how they have made package management so easy for new linux users.
If I had to sum up Ubuntu in one phrase I would call it the "Mandrake of Debian". It is very easy for newbies to use and has the latest hot applications on it.
I tried out the LiveCD and liked it a lot. I felt though it was essentially the same as Fedora 4 though in features and ease of use. I am used to Fedora's yum installer and like it better than GUI updaters so I will continue to use Fedora. I would keep an eye on Ubuntu though since it has great potential to become number one distro soon.

I've been curious about Ubuntu for awhile. Since this thread, I've installed Ubuntu on a spare drive to try. It is a very clean distro. If you don't like clutter, you'll like Ubuntu. It just gets down to business. It's got a pretty good Unofficial Starter guide. I'm using it right now. It's well thought out. Very clean, very nice. Like mbokil says, "it has great potential to become number one distro soon."

I sang the praises of Ubuntu, but Fedora is actually more of a complete distro, and much more full featured. Ubuntu is focused on the desktop, particularily Gnome. Fedora is focused on the desktop, development platform, and the server, featuring Gnome and KDE fully. Fedora also featured a more patched kernel, to extend functionality and increase stability.
Both are great distros, depending on what one needs.
Ubuntu's star is rising. But it remains to be seen how it maintains it's momentum after the upcoming Hoary release.
