So how many people are going to be installing FC4 Test 1 Monday if it comes out as scheduled?

I will be installing FC4 Test 1 on a seperate machine to test it out. I plan to run it thru the same things I run FC3 thru and see what I can do ti trip it up. Then it'll be off to bugzilla :)

I am so happy with FC3 that I want to help with FC4 development.

I'm still on FC2 on my main box and plan to move up to FC4-1, but probably not for the first week. I want to review greatscot's bugzillas first! :D

hopefully FC4 will fix the stupid problem with FC3 and palm not syncing - Its suppose to be just plug and play, just like in fc2 -

I'm going to install to an old 40Gb HDD this time, VMWare was not a fair environment when I tried FC3 test!

I'm hoping it will add anywhere near as much cool new stuff that SUSE Pro 9.3 is adding (Gnome 2.10, Xen 2.05, kernel 2.6.11, OO.org 2...) and hopefully Python 2.4.1 and some improved lm_sensors and Firewire drivers.

I might even try the spare 1u at work, I could never get RHEL4AS to install on it (didn't seem to like the HDD geometry and DMA settings....)

Just what is it that we are to expect from fc 4 in terms of new features? I am looking for a reason not to go through the pain of installing Gentoo on my laptop, I've got Gentoo about 90% running on my desktop and figure that the X86 version would behave more appropriately [I'm running the 64bit version of Gentoo right now, everything works save for sound mixing, aac audio playback which coincedentally renders more than half my anime collection half broken or in some cases totally without sound, and ntfs read in my 2.6.11 kernel don't know what the hell is the problem though going to try the r3 kernel and see if that will behave.] than what is on my desktop right now. However the ridiculous install times are keeping me from totally nuking FC3. Are they planning on fixing Gnome's screwed up menu layout? Is OO 2.0 going to be included?

Yeah, how long does it take to fix the menu problem?!

Whilst you mention install times, I figure that you usually need to download 300Mb+ of updates after a FC3 install, so if you have to download all that, there must be a way to make a local repository of the RPM's that are downloaded (I assume they're stored somewhere?) so you only have to do it once on one machine.

It seems stupid that if you run more than one FC3 machine per LAN, that each one has to download 300Mb+ of updates. I guess you could even burn a "CD 5" with the RPM's on, and install them at the end of the install (when it asks if you have any other CD's?)

Just looked at the release schedule, and it looks like it was pushed back a day. Oh well, one day isn't much more to wait.

I don't think I will try the test1... test2 or 3 maybe.
Yes and I'm totally psyched about FC4 (oo2, GNOME 2.10, ...)

I think I'll give it a fe weeks or so before trying FC4 - just getting into FC3 and have it working pretty well - hate to tamper with it - you know '...if its working , don't try to fix it...'. :-)

Sigh, I was looking at the mirrors and stuff. Under the testing folder, alot of them have a 3.90 directory. Unfortunately, they all give permission denied. : ( I want to start my download now.

After the whole Xorg/ATI drivers issue when FC 3 was initially released, I think I'll sit back and let everyone else be the guinea pig for this.....

Yay, mirrors are now open for downloading. I got mine started.

Me will start the testing process when Test2 is on the fly. And - of course - using the Fedora 'No-i-dont-like-this-system-because-the-hardware-drive-me-nuts' Core "Nightmare System" ^^

http://fedora.redhat.com/download/mirrors.html

You just have to poke thru them until you find a good one.

OK, it's the 15th of March and I went to the fedora site but can't see any links to download FC4. Where do I download the first test of FC4?

elasticwings
15th March 2005, 06:06 PM
Follow the link I posted above and just hit mirrors and look in the test folder. In alot of them there is a folder for version 3.90. Click on that folder and if it lets you in; they should be there. Alot of them give Permission Denied and/or other errors, but there are some that do work. I have the first three discs already.

thanks, man, I was looking for FC4test1 or some such. I saw the 3.90 and skipped over it thinking it was a previous version.
Downloading 3.90 now :)

If anyone is having a problem finding a fast mirror, I suggest duke's BitTorrent.

So far, I have it running. Although very very very slooooowwwlly! Disabling the syslogd has helped me tremendously. Although, I know that's not advisable. I just noticed that when I did a top it was using over 60% of the cpu.

Just installing it now (god I love 2Mbps ADSL!), I didn't see any mention of the Xen thing when I was choosing packages to install though - did I miss something or is it a default?

Hey people,

Anyone god a link for a european mirrir that actually has this?

Looked in UK mirrors, NOTHING (at time of writing..)

Checking through rest of europe mirrirs, they either do not have a folder at all for 3.90 or I apparently do not have permissions to view it.

So like I said I am working my way down the list of mirrors, but if anyone has a link to a mirror that is in europe and is up and working, please let me know..

Thanks

Dave

My torrent is startiting to pick up now I will be installing it on my laptop tonight I hope, I think bit tornado is giving me a bogus time of 14 hours left at 152kb down this should take no more than four to five hours, damned sucky client grumbles... I hope they fixed Gnome's menus.. You all think I can just leave /usr/local untouched and just format fc3 and put fc4 on top without causing massive breakage as is the usual case with FC and trying to maintain existing programs?
