 :( I have two other threads going right now, and MAN this site is GREAT! Great people GREAT help so far!!!

I have a Gatway M305CRV laptop. So far everything hardware is working except the wireless capability of my NIC (no big deal right now), my modem (not really a big deal either), and my graphics card (annoying resolution).

I NEED HELP WITH MY GRAPHICS CARD!!!

I'm a master at Windows, but a lackie at Linux. I'm tired of MicroCrap so I dumped them and moved to Linux. Fedora C3.

My graphics card is:

INTEL 852MG (9525538). It can support 1024x768/32bit/60Hz.

All the box is letting me see is 800x600. The GUI tool (dont know a lot of Linux's CLI) has a drop down box for a crap load of graphic card manufacturers but not for Intel. I've tried to search for drivers for this card, but I dont know what I am doing or looking for. I dont know about loading a new kernel (and if I do, do I loose the security functions of FC3).

I just want 1024X768@ 16million colors!!! PLEASE HELP!! I KNOW CRAP ABOUT WHAT I'M DOING HERE!!!

     :(    ;)

Good for you that you switched.

Note that in linux you should get accustomed to finding out solutions to your problems on your own, and only when that fails, try to post on the forums. but thats just me.

A simple google for 'linux intel 852mg drivers' returned more than enough results regarding your issue. It seems that support is limited for linux drivers, but is available still.

In fact you might want to take a look at what Intel has to say about their graphics drivers and linux support:

First place to look and how? Google.com, search for the chipset and the model of the item in question. Sites that popped up were support sites and sales sites. The sales sites are also a place to find out what you have.

The links............

Gateway M305CRV, INTEL 852MG (9525538).

How I found the answer............
First I needed to identify the items that aren't working in the Microsoft Windows environment since the real names of the devices might be shown and not the chipset alone.

How To Install Drivers and Software - Windows® XP
http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/Gateway/M305CRV/3501715slWindowsXP.shtml

........ Select the Intel® 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Driver check box, and then click Install. ........ http://supcontent.gateway.com/support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/Gateway/M305CRV/Software/xpvideo.gif

Note the number isn't what you posted.

That's the long way. The easier way would be to look at the list in Fedora Core.

Log in as "root". From GNOME it would be...

System Settings > Display > Hardware tab > Video Card > Configure

Scroll down and you will see Intel 852, pick that.

What is the Monitor? Check the specifications or choose off of Generic LCD Display option under the configure Monitor option in the same place you choose the video card.

From the specifications list I see that the max resolution and max frequency of the LCD are XGA and 60Hz respectively. Make a note of that before hard setting what you choose.

I tried that... The card wasn't listed. Thats the reason for the post... I do really appreciate your help!! Despite what people may think, I am quite adept at PC troubleshooting, but I have NO experience with Linux! Setting that aside, I would like to extend my GREAT appreciation to everyone who has posted, wanting to help me! Its really awesome to become part of such a great set of people! As my skill set improves with this *new* (to me at least) OS, I hope to be able to help others, as 'they' have helped me!!!!

Marku,

Kewl.. I'll try that too... I just hope that I can on this laptop. Its not very BIOS friendly. :-)

On what t3gah suggested, I went through the steps again. This time it says it 1024x768, but no change in display. Still the same (yes I logged out of the xsystem and even tried a reboot). I'm going to update the driver. If all else fails, I'll reload the os and try again :-) Thanks again!

Ok. I'm really getting agrivated with this computer. I've updated the drivers. Modified the xorg.conf file to what the intel site said I should. I selected the proper card, and monitor type. Adjusted the resolution accordingly, and still this darn screen is viewing 800x600. This is really getting on my nerves! Any other suggestions? I've just spent two hours on various sites and nothing useful (or that I understand).

I have the same problem on my M305CRV with its "Untel" 852/855GM. It says 1024x768, yadda yadda but only displays up to 800x600 in practice. After messing around, I'm currently stuck in 640x480.

On a side note, I realize how this may sound to some people, but it's issues like this that the big companies like Microsoft take advantage of to get more people to buy their products rather than take the open-source road.

I think an easier solution, for those who don't mind spending $, is to buy/order a laptop that comes configured with an open-source operating system. You then KNOW it will work, and you are of course free to experiment with other operating systems, and if it fails, you always have the factory-shipped OS to fall back on for reference. I think I'll do this after paying some bills.

Which implies: if you think you will want to divorce Ma Krosoft, make inquiries about the computer you're thinking of buying in terms of its support in the open-source arena. If it doesn't seem to get a lot of support, tell the vendor you won't be buying this particular model and why - pressure on the bottom line will motivate more than anything else.

There are a couple of things to try.

First, make sure that you have the appropriate monitor selected (LCD 1024x768).

First, as long as Hardware Graphics Acceleration is of little concern to you, select the Generic VESA driver for your card. You may find this under either the V's, the G's, or at ther very top or bottom of the list. The VESA driver is great, I used to use it all the time on the laptop I'm on now (but they finally fixed the S3 drivers). If you DO want HGA, then try setting the driver to ANY intel card. Often in Linux, the driver behind all models for one company are actually the same.

Oh, and to fix your wireless network problem, just get a PCMCIA card based on the Prism chipset, a google search should help you find one! :D

I have the same problem too... i had fc2,fc3,ubuntu,red hat 9, running just fine with the graphic card and with 3d accel, i could play q3 with 90 fps, but NOW when upgrading to fc4 the display just freaks out, it dowsnt work with any configuration of video or display, neither with the very same driver i had on the other OS or with the vesa generic driver. i dont have any more ideas :x im stuck in fc3 now ...
