Hi All!
My sound is now OK. Thanks for your help. This is what solved it:
Background:
- Basic config: Fedora 2.6.5-1.358, SB Live (snd-emu10k1), alsa-1.0.8, with cheap powered PC speakers, on an ordinary IBM PC.
- Basic sound conditions/symptoms: The "test sound" from system-config-soundcard showed that the card was visible to the system, but no sound was produced. And the main configuration elements were all in place: "lspci" showed the presence of the sound card. "modprobe soundcore" (spelling) showed that sound was catered for in the kernel. "lsmod" and the configuration of /etc/modprobe.conf were according to alsa install instructions.
The solution:
1: Physical assembly: Make sure the speaker-jack is in the green port. ( Oh, yes!)
(Thanks Justol'Bob!)
2: Using alsamixer: Using the left/right arrows, scroll as far right as you can, there should be four objects: External, SB Live, and two Sigma tel. The External is possibly for Laptops; the SB Live is for the SB Live Analog/Digital Output Jack (the green port), the Sigmatel is for the midi/mixers. Select the SB Live object, with the side arrows, displayed "Sb line Analog/Digital output jack = off", then press shift+M to unmute it. Displayed will be: "Sb line Analog/Digital output jack". Also 00 will be displayed above the SB Live object. Exit with ESC, and execute "alsactl store" to save the settings. You should now have Digital sound.

Search for help:
Try doing a search with keyword "alsamixer" or "aumix" and following threads referring to "No sound". And, try googling: SB Live "Analog/Digital Output Jack", and you'll find all sorts of interesting tips, fixes, and ideas.
Thanks to: :)
Thanks also go to fedoraforum users, like:
- raghavendra (for encouragement)
- Brian1 (for ideas on bios, make instructions, etc)
- Firewing1 (for obliging me to follow the alsa install quidelines - closely, keeping me away from recompiling the kernel, modprobe, and alsamixer settings)
- foolish (for always pointing to alsamixer and aumix as a likely solution.)
- Justol'Bob (for carefully reading my postings and finding my errors, see #1, above.)
So, thanks again
