I am running mozilla 1.4.1, mplayer 1.0, and mplayer plugin 2.11. I can view all sorts of media quite well. However, when trying to stream media from an mms:// url, mozilla errors with this message.
mms is not a registered protocol
I have found some info regarding registering network protocols via the about:config panel but I have not been able to make mms:// work. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.

Check under mozilla in Help -> Plugins (or something like that) to make sure that the plugin is installed correctly. Other than that just search around in your about:config listing and find protocols and try adding one for mms based on what you see.

Been there and done that. The plug in works fine. I can view/hear all sorts of media in the browser with it. The only failure is trying to access mms:// URLs.
In about:config, I have added and entry for mms according to this howto:
http://linux.sgms-centre.com/howto/mozilla.php
It discusses mailto:// not mms:// but it was the best information I could find. It failed. I still get the mms is not a registered protocol business.
Thanks for the response anyway. Any other takers?

Sure. :)
Mozilla 1.4.x doesn't support the mms:// and rstp:// protocols.
However, there's a setting you can add to mozilla preferences to add external program support for running mms streams. I also believe this is fixed in Mozilla 1.6.x (haven't tested myself)

You can do all kinds of protocol magic with the Protozilla Mozilla plugin (http://protozilla.mozdev.org/). Unfortunately I could not get it to work. I'm only finding versions for Mozilla 1.2.1. Anyone find a more recent version or know how to mess with Mozilla's protocol handling?

Then on the opened page click with the rigth buttom mouse and select
NEW, and then STRING
Then, put this in the box: network.protocol-handler.app.mms
Click OK, and in the next box writte the software that you want
Mozilla open the mms: Mplayer, Xine or aviplay, and click OK, and it
is all.
For me works fine. (I'm using Knoppix 3.4)

Acabo de leer una página en Portugues donde viene la solución a esto.
http://www.vivaolinux.com.br/dicas/verDica.php?codigo=1392
En el navegador de mozilla escribir en la linea de Direccion: about:config
Se abrira una página con mucha información, sobre la página, con el
boton derecho dar click y seleccionar NEW, seguido de STRING

Hi all, I was having the same problem and this solution did the trick. Now I have a simpl problem. I'm using Mplayer and it opened the stream using command line I think. How do I stop the stream now. (Keep in mind that I'm very much a newbie to linux)
Thanks all for any help
