Hi.
Ok so finally got FC3 onto my sisters machine (took some work installing the Dlink dwl-520+ wireless card though, and I have this strange feeling, its gonna fall over, but for now its working), it took some pushing, but she's happy with the end result - well almost.
She wants 4 seperate browsers - I don't actually understand the reasoning for this, AND she only had 3 browsers in WinXP so I am guessing she can live with only 3.
Please post suggestions for Graphical browsers that can be installed under FC3
I can only think of Firefox (as installed) and Mozilla, I also thought of Opera but I can't find this in Synaptic, is there not an Opera for FC3? or is it just not available through Synaptic?
By The Way, she is using the Gnome desktop.
Thanks
Dave

Firefox (in distribution)
Mozilla
Opera (grab it from their website)
Konqueror (comes with KDE, in distribution)

:D cheers
Well that gave me a great big smile. I just can't image someone using wine just so they can use IE :D
But an excellent idea, thanks.
As for Opera, yeah, I found that web page, I didn't realise that it was a browser that was sold, I thought it was like Mozilla, well I am downloading the Opera with adverts now...
I was also wondering if Netscape would work?
Thanks for the list

Did a quick search on Google.com and it came up with this site;
http://www.itp.uni-hannover.de/~kreutzm/en/lin_browser.html
Hope that helps.

Maybe you need to train her in how to use the NEW TAB feature in firefox. You can have as many tabs open as you wish. Also mozilla is already installed in fedora 3. Run:mozillaand you will see...but firefox is the default since fc3. Opera is also avaliable for linux.

webdevelopers must test their websites under different browsers... so here is one (and probably only) reason to do so.

AFAIK if you are a student, or run internet cafe you can register Opera (no ads) for free.

hehe, Yeah I see where your coming from on that one :D
She had firefox and opera on her Windows install, so she's quite good with tabs.
She needs at least 3 browsers (as that is what she had before) so that she can have different sessions on the same web site.
Multiple tabs don't allow for this, they assume all tabs for one site are 'extensions' of 1 session.
I didn't realise Mozilla was installed as well as FireFox though.
Thank Imdeemvp

Great tip, my sister is no developer, she's a 12yo school kid, I wonder if the fact she's at school will be enough for student status, or is it only available to Uni/college students?
Off back to Opera's site to find out more... :p

Sounds like a hacker-in-training. I just wonder why someone would need more than one HTTP session on any web-site, unless it's at the least being very sneaky about something...

you don't need three different browsers to do that... you don't even need a browser since there are tools that do this better :]

I think its maybe a little more innocent than that, she is only 12, not that I don't imagine a 12yo could be a hacker, I have heard of many clever kids, I genuinely have no reason to believe that my sister is into this activity, in fact I doubt she would know where to start, however you have my imagination now, so I am going to have to quiz her for her reasons behind her browser request.
FYI, she has Firefox, Mozilla, Opera and some rubbish (personal opinion) browser called Epithony or something.
I have not had any complaints about her FC setup yet. The only thing that she mentioned was that she would like to play The Sims - I guess for that I may have to look at something like wine, or throw The Sims in the bin where it belongs and tell her I can't find it??

I believe you....my hija is almost 17yrs and sometimes she has up 7-9 tabs open using 2 browsers. She saids she lets one page load up and when done reading it jumps to the next one. So I believe is just brian storming....I've noticed when she writes her school reports. :p

Your sister could also open up another X-Windows session, and log in with a different Linux user-id, thus doubling the number of different browsers available to her.

Not sure on why you would need so many browsers to research stuff, I used to browse like that when doing essays and such at school, but I just used IE, simply open up google, search for information, the open up more google windows to search for anything interesting I saw in the first google search.
Can just do it using tabs or use wikipedia now. And as for testing websites, as far as I know, mozilla and firefox render sites identicaly.
Oddly, however, firefox in linux and firefox in windows render sites slightly differenly though.
And throw the sims in the bin, it is not a real computer game, real computer games either have hardcore puzzle solving, or have guns and explosions.

If she's using a chat room or bulletin board, then she can easily recommend her own posts, or even talk to herself when she gets bored.

Well people, like I said, you had my imagination, so I have been using the vnc viewer to view her remote desktop.
It is infact innocent, although jame_in_denver has hit the nail on the head.
Any one heard of a site called neopets? she appears to have several accounts on that one site, she appears to use one account as her main account, and several others as accounts to generate money.
On closer inspection, you make this pretend money by playing games, but you can only play each game a couple of times a day, some games are easier than others blah, blah, blah.
From what I have seen, all she is doing is playing the easy games as many times as possible under each account then getting each account to buy something from her main account's shop, giving her 4 times as much money from each game. Sneaky and probably against their rules, but they can't be too bothered as I am sure they could keep a track on the IP address if they where that bothered. (we have a static IP, so I think they could identify the 'trend' if they looked hard enough) Also I would guess that their database keeps track of transactions between the accounts.
Therefore, if they leave their systems open for abuse, then thats whats gonna happen.
So mystery solved, but not as interesting an outcome as it possibly could have been :)
Thanks for all your suggestions though.
Dave
PS: Doesnt the Remote desktop/vnc viewer work well in Linux, its excellent, currently only using it over a LAN, so I am going to have to try a connection over the net to see if speed etc stays up, but so far, it is performing pretty damn good.

That is not a good ethics lesson. I'm not going to preach or anything, but I would advise taking a long hard look at that sentence and see if you would want that to be the lesson she learns.
This is simply my opinion.
