Hi!

I'm using FC3 with the latest kernel update (760) and using an Ipod (FireWire). I'm sure everyone's sick of talking about Ipods, but I really want to nail this problem down, and could use some help.

So when I plug in my ipod, hal will assign it to /dev/sdb or something similar. The problem is, when I eject it, it's not killing the 20-hal.hotplug processes, and therefore when I plug it in again it assigns it to a totally different device, and this makes allowing users to eject the ipod impossible. (have to eject as root ) Also, my computer ends up with tons of 20-hal.hotplug, 10-hal.dev, and hotplug processes. I wonder if there is a way to tell the computer to recognize the ipod based on it's volume name, so that it gets assigned to /dev/ipod every time I plug it in. Also, how do I prevent hotplug from running tons of processes? I've had my system lock up when I plug in my ipod because of this, and it's really frustrating.

My ipod is Windows formatted, and i have no problem transferring to/from it. Autofs usually mounts it to /media/NATRIX_S_IP which I assume is based on the volume name. What about disabling hal's handling of the ipod? is that possible, or would it not be hot-swappable then?

Thanks for any help!
