Sony DVD/RW Loads DVDs/CDs but won't play them

Hello, I've been having trouble with my Sony DVD/RW under Fedora Core 3. It reads data cds just fine. If I run xcdroast as root I can burn data cds (couldn't figure out how to make a multisession disc but that's an issue for another day). However, if i put an audio cd in the drive, the audio player loads, then gives a drive error. Similarly, if I put a DVD into the drive, Totem loads then gives a drive error. Any ideas as to why this is happening?

by default, the totem in fc3 doesn't have the codecs to play a dvd. use synaptic to re-install totem. do a search for 'how to setup fc3 for average desktop'.
