View Full Version : How to get CD player working - not easy!

Tried to run the CD player, and it showed an error. Opening the config panel it was pointed to /dev/cdrom - which does not exist. Eventually found it had to be changed to /dev/hdc
The problem is that normal users don't have permission to use /dev/hdc, so I had to open a terminal, su to root, and chmod 666 /dev/hdc.
Now it works, finally. (feeling proud that I managed to figure it out myself :) )
I have to wonder how a distribution can come misconfigured like this.

/dev/cdrom is supposed to point to your CD drive. Strange.
Moved to How to.

This problem is fixed by updating the HAL, hardware abstraction layer. Use up2date or download the rpm for this. After rebooting (sure fire way) the problem goes away.

I see. Having just installed it 1 1/2 days ago, I hadn't got around to updating it yet. Thanks.

I had the same problem in KDE enviroment only, and solved it by update the udev package.
Please, see http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/udev/

It's very easy to drive yourself insane with FC3 if you attempt to fix the bugs before you take in all the updates. So, make sure that you update first then check for problems.

Yes as soon as you install run all the updates to fix some of the bugs that came with fc3. I always do the first and then install all other apps.

I guess this could fix my problem lol
too bad I have to wait until monday to get an internet connection to my Linux box ... and that is, if I'm lucky to have it work immediately to update

Is this why cd recording doesn't work in FC3?

Possibly, IIRC, there is a udev update that fixes a K3B problem.
