View Full Version : Merger of Fedora's Forums?

There is currently an interresting question being raised at another Fedora forums:http://fedora.artoo.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=326
What do you think about a possible integration with this (and possibly other) boards?
Please vote and place opinions below. I personally am 100% for it. :)

I think it is a good idea to merge all the fedora forums into one.

yeah, it would be nice to centralized support and help some system admin like me :) to get the fedora support

I think this would greatly benefit Fedora and Fedora support. Thumbs up from me.

In theory its a good idea. But in reality we haven't approached anyone about etc...

Well I think as long as the support and willingness is there, then the rest will fall in to place.
The more centralised the support community becomes the better off the users: Faster responses, more helpful/knowledgable members, more information resources..etc.

Indeed the benefits are big, I think that it would really benefit the community as a whole. It would certainly make it easier for people to obtain help, as there would be a larger member base. This could hopefully generate a real community of regulars.

We all started out that way (I'm still in between :D) It feels good to finally begin returning the favors.

I'm for it. Get the whole community together. It makes life easier for newbies who don't know where to turn.
I'm assuming this is technically possible, that there are import scripts and the like to merge the forums? #fedora Forums is running phpBB

I'm delighted that my probosal has been recieved in such a way. Hopefully the leaders of fedora.artoo.net and the head monkeys here can talk and maybe we'll see a merge one day.
I have some other suggestions as well hopefully they will be recieved as well as my first. Fedoranews.org links to this forum, this forum should also link to fedoranews.org. Besides, the unoffical f.a.q. should be adopted into wiki, so that people can make the answers and the questions better.
My dream is to see a network of fedora sites containing fedoraforum.org, fedoranews.org and the official site where they all link to eachother and support eachother.

right, and i bet you also think it's a good idea to merge all the yum resources too, so that we don't have to manually add freshrpms, newrpms, atrpms ...
and maybe eventually all the linux distributions into one ?
the whole idea of "good ideas" like these is to centralize all the resources and make best use of it so that it will be more efficient
there is absolutely NOTHING WRONG with it, except that people are not like machine
people always got lots of different ideas which makes this "good idea" too good to be true ...
you may merge with one or two other forums, but you can't and should not even think about to merge ALL
that's just a silly dream!
microsoft definitely would love to see the whole world running windows, but we are using linux
why is that? because people think differently ...

It's a pooling of resources, to make the community bigger stronger and mroe coherent.

Notice that its all "Fedora forums", not all linux-related forums.
What I want is not to remove all competition and merge everything into one. I want people to stop wasting effort doing eachothers work over. And yes, I would like to see the repositories merge into something better, (fedora-extras?).
Competition and diversity is good, I love how you can get different distros, different browsers, different ftpds and so on. I love this, really.
But we have to take care of new users, as most users of a growing open source desktop will be new to the entire concept. If you don't know how and why you should choose one over another, you will get lost.
Alternatives are all good, but there should be the default, and then the alternatives. New users can go with the default, experienced users, people who like to try new things and fools may use the alternatives.
This is how I hope to see the Fedora community in the future. We need one default that we all agree is the default, and then some alternatives. Fedoraforum.org should be that default, the others can be the alternatives.

*shudders at the thought of having to pay for community access*

I'm all for reducing the duplication of effort, so I support the merge. Instead of a couple isolated communities we will have one very diverse one. Individuality doesn't have to be given up for a sense of community.
On the practical side of making this possible, I noticed that the vBulletin manual (http://www.vbulletin.com/manual/import.html) mentions import systems available in the members download area. So we won't have to write our own script. :)

yeah, import is easy, but i want to write somehting to merge the posts and the users :)
Ug

Some of the users will be duplicate though.

Well its currently 16 in support and 1 undecided. I think we know where users of this forum stand on the proposal.
We are still waiting back from the relevant people from fedora.artoo.net. Stay tuned. :)

If there was one uptimate Fedora resource it would be lots nicer. Nothing wrong with fedoraforums or fedoranews, but if they all worked together it would be losts easier to get info, and a lot of the redundency of info could be stopped too.
Maybe if there was one massive FAQ for the two or something it would help a lot of super newbies

We've heard back, and its a positive response. So fingers crossed it should happen.

Hi! I'm Max, the Administrator of the #fedora forums (fedora.artoo.net), and also the author of the Unofficial Fedora FAQ.
I just thought I'd stop by and say how much I really like fedoraforum.org, and that I'm really excited about the merge. There's a great community here, and I'm honored to be a part of it.
I'll probably say more when there's an official announcement. :-)

Which shouldn't be too much longer now hopefully ;)
Just got to wait for the physical merge now.

I'm going to start working on the physical aspect today. It'll take a little bit to sort out the threads. Once I have a SQL script in place to do it, then I can shut down fedora.artoo.net's forums, and plop the tables on over to Tux.
Avatraxiom

So, just to let you know, I've sent the data to Tux, and he's working on importing it into fedoraforum.org, users and all.

Announcements will be made, once the merge is complete.
